Reviews
- Unexpected pastoral downtempo ambience from the Prefuse 73 man. Recalls Ultramarine's 'Every man and woman is a star' from the early 90's. Exciting, engaging, blissful with some glitchyness, esp on the opening track (when you think "Oh boy, so far so Mego catalogue"....but then it settles down into sunny pastoral beatific listening pleasure). Brief, too. A real blast: short and sweet and summery, full of heat hazes and head-nodding dub influences. Cheap too, at the moment.
Buy a copy, is my considered advise. - What a nice electronic trip hop jazzy record, warm like a crackling fire. this music still stands strong in 2022. recommended!
- Edited 18 years agoScott Herren goes from cut-up hip-hop with his Prefuse 73 project to a more ambient, downtempo vibe as Savath & Savalas. And while one in not necessarily better than the other, Savath + Savalas' debut, FOLK SONGS FOR TRAINS, TREES AND HONEY, has a mesmerizing beauty that's sustained throughout. The quiet tones and repeating patterns of "Transportation Theme" are like watching clouds in the sky. Fragments of jazz woodwinds and guitar, backed with radio static, drift through on "Binoculars." The meandering stop-start of "F Ride + Blues" benefits greatly by having its mellow drums punctuate each interruption, even as static fills in the backdrop. "Journey's Home" has a folksy twang to it that seems perfectly suited for a postmodern Western. A moody, atmospheric album.
