I have to say, if back in the day or any day for that matter, I would've been livid, if I was in a hurry and I'd blindly grabbed a copy of this mispress from the record store thinking I was picking up a bargain of a Detroit warehouse classic only to have my expectations thwarted as soon I got home and that needle dropped, and the sound of a pungent pile of 🐕🐕‍🦺🦮💩💩💩 on side B started to arse-belch out of the speakers. The pressing plant could've at least got the correct and legendary Omar Sharif, now that would've been at least a tiny consolation hehe👍

I love Salsa life, originally the reason I bought the record, but as I've got older, the beginning has come into its own.
Imo the beginning needs to be listened to from Start to finish to be appreciated fully, it's journey music for sure.

Don't want to get caught up in the discussions about what Derrick did or didn't produce, but had a question about the Carl Craig co-writer credit on this.

The 1992 Transmat release (and the subsequent Transmat Classics reissue) state that Carl co-wrote 'Salsa Life'.

However other releases state that Carl co-wrote 'Drama' instead. Examples below:

Rhythim Is Rhythim - The Beginning released by Kool Kat in 1990
Derrick May - Innovator released by Sony in 1996
Derrick May - Innovator released by Transmat in 1997

Does anyone know categorically whether Carl co-wrote 'Salsa Life' or 'Drama'?

From start to finish it's the best all round release by Derrick May. The Beginning, the stand-out track, feels like the soundtrack to a story out of a 1001 Nights; whatever you imagine, see, feel,,,I guarantee The Beginning will transport you. In contrast, Emanon (NoName...ah haaa!) is on another level, drifting away from vast space into a macro world of call and answer. Drama is swathed in strings, but feels like a bit like a pre-amble for Salsa Life, a nod and a wink to a certain 'Strings' track (Ah Haaa!), which by way of a revolving merry go-round Berceuse, returns us to the end of The Beginning. The 'Out of the Blue' organ of Salsa Life reminds me of the same in the 'Dub Version of Bas Noir's I'm Glad You Came To Me' (Knowing me knowing you Ah-Haaaaa!) Joking aside, if you are into classics and don't have 'The Beginning' you're clearly away with the fairies!

The Beginning. An escalation of a multi dimensional world. Exquisite sounds are felt as soon as the music starts. The complex rhythmic part and the hypnotic synth loop are a sort of an introduction of what is about to come: the deepest feelings. The counterpoint between that bass and the pads, reinforced by the drums, the things that makes the existence a blessing.

Drama... omg. I remember buying this 12” when it came out ( from Eastern Bloc in Affleck’s). Getting it home and playing it. Then playing Drama again... just deep deep tech of the highest order.... a lost era

                        'The Beginning' is a masterpiece.

Random fact:The track Emanon, is noname spelt backwards.

                        Peace out.
