I bought this new and sealed. I opened it and played it on my newest turntable with less than 50 hours on it at the time. It skipped in multiple places, including Dixie Babylon. I can't help but think this pressing was flawed. I can't play this record on ANY tt and have it play flawlessly. It just won't DO that.

It’s a bold move to name one’s album The Golden Age, with David Lowery explaining that to me by saying, “In our history (as Cracker), we have no essential ‘Golden Age’. The term usually refers to a high point in a period of time. During a golden age, there is most likely a long period of peace, harmony, stability and prosperity. The Greeks golden age came from breakthroughs in metal work, art and thought throughout its golden ages. Sometimes we personally go through golden ages. There was one point in my life, and it lasted 50 minutes. I thought it was a golden age. It carried my ears away on an emotional journey, it changed my taste in music for a very long time. It was my personal golden age.”

The album opens with the apparently angst-saturated "I Hate My Generation,” an explosive introduction to the record, opening up with power chords that lead us into a catchy guitar licks, where the writing on the song simply doesn’t relay much about its meaning, other than hatred for people that one had grown up with. "Big Dipper" is a beautiful five minute long ballad of love, opening up with a slow paced guitar riffs played over piano chords harking back images of early Dylan. It’s the fifth track, the title track that is so expansive, opening up with a beautiful intro, with guitar riffs over other stringed instruments that ebb and swirl together. One of the most interesting tracks is "Dixie Babylon", the longest song on the album, clocking in at a little over seven minutes, opening up like a flower very softly, very intimately with a very simple drum beat backed by peaceful soothing guitar lines. The song creates a sad atmosphere laced with emotional vocals and lyrics. I don’t know why (laughing) but the choruses appear to suggest having intercourse and just washes on.

Other songs move on relentlessly, making the album of the greatest musical editions of the 90’s. The Golden Age is a very fine reflective album.  It states facts and asks questions for which there may seem to be answers, but in the end, all they, and all we are left with is the music, a soundtrack for a life less certain.  The music is rhythmic, dynamic, and solidly rooted.  There is a great deal of rock ’n roll blending effortlessly with the blues and alternative country flavorings ... to the point where all are so intermixed that it becomes impossible to distinguish one from the other ... creating an atmosphere and space that is very entirely comfortable to be in.
