- I feel I must play the "Emperor has no clothes" card on this one. Although a lot of work went in to making this look official, it is amazing they couldn't find an actual Joy Division fan to listen to it and do a better job of identifying and labeling the tracks.
1. Synth tone - 17 seconds of the opening sound from "Exercise One."
2. Hannett's Lift Recording 1 - 9 seconds of an old lift (elevator) being sampled (used on "Insight"), about a minute of silent buzzing, 9 more seconds of cranking the lift, topped off with 30 more seconds of silent buzzing.
3. JD keyboard doodles - church style organ notes being played randomly, the sound of someone using an old rotary phone to dial, soft mumbling of people who don't seem to know what they're doing, giggling, and some bass notes.
4. Hannett's lift recording 2 - This one seemingly combines track 2 and 3 (a lift sample with one long organ note which is used in the next track at the start), and some mumbles.
5. JD number false start 1 - 48 seconds of them starting to play "Insight."
6. Curtis, Hannet, Gretton interplay, chit chat, & cup smashing - this is not even chit chat, it's people sounding tired of being in the studio, waiting around for them to play, some attempts to smash a cup - riveting.
7. Hannett speaks - Sounds like Hook at the start, followed by 3 very brief snippets of Hannett trying to sound smart.
8. JD number false start 2 - This is 6 seconds of "From Safety to Where...?" That's all.
9. From Safety to Where...? - Some extra guitar sounds in the background at times.
10. Autosuggestion - The screechy noise is let echo on longer into the breaks. Some extra drum beats at the end.
11. Heart & Soul - Sound a whole heck of a lot like the album version, but with audio crackle.
12. N4 Europop - This is "Decades." Sounds like the album version with even more surface noise. If "Decades" was considered "europop" to them, the word must mean something different in the UK, like "fanny."
13. 24 Hours - I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Sounds like the album version, with the drums a bit more muddled.
14. Passover - I suppose all of the album versions can technically be called "Hannett's Personal Mixes" in the end, yes?
15. N4 - "Decades" with Ian starting by counting in 1, 2, 3. The first break is devoid of some keyboards. Guitar work is different mid-way.
16. N4 - "Decades" with Ian starting by counting in 1, 2, 3. Guitar picking a bit more pronounced early on. One keyboard note has harder attack in the middle. Bass a little bubblier towards the end.
17. The Eternal - Starts with the "Decades" count in from Track 15 or 16. Hmmm. Low keyboard beat, Ian voice samples, high piano line repeated twice at the start. High piano line repeats throughout middle. Final, repetitive high piano melody removed from latter part. Ending has a harder keyboard percussion.
18. The Eternal - Ian samples in the beginning. No high piano line in the middle, but the repetitive piano melody is briefly in the end. An extra piano not at the very end.
So there you have a more detailed explanation of what you'll find on this. Hope it helps! - Sounds absolutely fantastic. Great pressing and recordings. Feels like an experience vs. random tracks. Some cool dialog as well. Definitely worth picking up. I love it. I picked it up fingers crossed it would be decent. It exceeded my expectations. It's interesting to hear Martin Hannet's personal take on the tracks. I almost prefer them. All the instruments and the vocals sound isolated and super tight. It has a certain mellowness to it, but on the critical side, it can be a little too sibilant at times - crispy highs, but not too bad. Just don't focus on the highs and listen to it as a whole and you'll be fine. The quality is great.
