Reviews
referencing Thru Ya City (12", 33 ⅓ RPM, Single) TBV2222
My father is an old friend of Geraldine Hunt, who produced a group (Cheri) that featured her daughter. This song samples "Come With Me (To My Island)", yet the album's liner notes only mention the interpolation of the Lovin' Spoonful song at the chorus. I know this is a production by the late James J-Dilla Yancey, and while I have enjoyed many of his other productions ("Runnin" by the Pharcyde will always be one of my favorites), the law is the law, and when artists are sampled heavily (the entire melody of the De La track is lifted from the the Cheri track) appropriate royalties should be paid. This is just starting, so I'll offer updates as I hear more.
