Probably my favorite overall song by my favorite singer of all time. The edginess and urgency, which come across well in the music video, may surprise fans of Sade's languid later work. This came out five years before Massive Attack's debut album, yet I've never heard it get properly credited as ground zero for that type of crepuscular, melodic trip hop sound. I can't imagine M.A. existing without having heard this song. It's also a fleetingly rare Sade song with any male vocals, and they're stunningly great. Ditto for Helen's near-falsetto near the end. The overall lyrical theme is negative and regretful, but is tempered by lines like "The rose we remember, the thorns we forget." Some subtle violin, or synth violin, adds additional mysterious flair.
Just an absolute masterpiece sonically and structurally, showing off the classic Sade sound while introducing some new wrinkles that kept this band several steps ahead of its many acolytes. A fun, diversionary instrumental b-side tops it off nicely.
Edited 4 years agoReally need an instrumental version of "Never As Good As The First Time". Anyone knows if it exists? Couldn't find one.
