I have one with
BTSD-6021-1A is on Side 2
BTSD-6021-1B is on Side 1- Some early standards & a 1940s revivalism big band Ellingtonian jazz number and the rest a mix of cutting-edge funk, R&B & mid-'70s soul cum nascent disco/fusion.
A marvellous if slightly uneven genre hopping record. referencing Steppin' (LP, Album, Stereo) BTSD-6021
Killer grooves, great vocals, amazing musicians including Wah Wah Watson, Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, and others. Plus, if you're not absolutely losing your mind at the end of Goin' Down Slowly, you're not listening. That song is one of the hardest-driving, over-the-top, bonkers funky songs I've ever heard. Crank it up and let it play all the way through.- Edited 4 years agoI wouldn't necessarily call myself a Pointer Sisters connossieur by any measure, but their musical legacy was unparalleled. It wasn't just that these ladies were fiery vocal stylists that could sing anyone under the table at any given time either. Their fearless eclecticism was something to behold—pop, R&B, gospel, jazz, funk, country, rock, disco, and everything else in-between. This featured 1975 album, Steppin' was their third studio release and fourth outing on Blue Thumb Records. The impressive thing about their early Blue Thumb albums was how brave and unconstrained the music was. Each album embodied what made pop music of the mid-70s so uniquely accessible and adventurous all at the same time. With Steppin', the Sisters kicked all cylinders of their artistic chops into high gear. In paying homage to the jazz staples and history they grew up on back in Oakland, California, they found space for a six-minute revisionist jazz medley devoted to the memory of the recently-deceased Duke Ellington and a rather haunting cover of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Wanting Things." They even interpolate a deep Isaac Hayes instrumental for the poignant ballad, "Easy Days." But, they didn't hang their funk and soul bag up, as three slices of heavy, cutting-edge funk anchor this album--the propulsive psych-funk of "How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side)," the spacey jazz-funk fusion of "Chainey Do," and their stomping cover of Allen Toussaint's "Going Down Slowly." Lots of surprises are found here, including an all-star cast of collaborators and musicians. The Pointer Sisters were truly ahead of their time.
