- Edited 5 years agoVery versatile release, you get here finest electro, broken beat/nu jazz, detroitish techno and even one acoustic landscape (Brela).
Full of melodies and emotions, this is one of the best works by Russ Gabriel imo ! I mean vinyl version of this album.
I consider this to be one of the best albums in my collection.
It's a pity it's so underrated - Edited 19 years agoTaking a step out from the marvelous house that marked INTO THE UNKNOWN, Russ Gabriel goes electro-funk with THE OTHER SIDE PROJECT, VOLUME ONE. "Subliminal Dream" wobbles with the best of them, while "God is the Moment" puts forth some jazz saxophone, and "Tisch-Tennis" will make you wonder where the linoleum is. "My New Room" edges back into house-territory, but in a tichy way that recalls the glorious days of Ferox. By contrast, "Masonette" has a delicacy with the guitar and strings that recall the previous album. The strings make a reappearance on "Ode to Ade," but, overall, this album doesn't hold my attention the way INTO THE UNKNOWN did, despite the gentle, near ambient beauty of "Brela." It's excellent, but missing that extra kick to make it a masterpiece.
- Edited 20 years agoTisch-tennis smashes the floor! Funky synth lines, nice percussion drive and a supercool sax solo. Works very well in an electrofunk context. But it's definitely not the only gemm on that album :-)
