When the intro to an album samples random Derek Bailey guitar plonks then you know you're in for some really experimental stuff to come next. It all feels accidental as the very artwork it's wrapped in: im yet to understand the rhythm foundations for 'Facelift' and 'Davos S', what's Jelinek singing about (or saying even) and the supposed Thelonious Monk or Sun Ra references in the titles. There's even some weirdly chopped up Wes Montgomery samples in between. Moments of weird beauty, pure beat and just head-scratching suffled along the ride. Not an easy listen, IMO!

No one does warm glitch-house like Jan Jelinek, and LA NOUVELLE PAUVRETE is no exception. “Music to Interrogate By” is surprisingly jazzy, given its ominous title, but a bit of the darkness does creep through. “Facelift” and “A Waste Land” are all mystery, and “There are Other Words (They Have Not Told You Of)” winds around Jelinek’s own languorous vocals. But for those craving more traditional Jelinek, “My Favourite Shop” merges a sunny 60s pop sensibility with the affectionate clicks we know and love, while “If’s And’s and But’s” has more of a 70s funk vibe. Another outstanding entry from Mr. Jelinek.
