- Edited one year agoThis is a recently rediscovered Bill Evans Trio performance from 1976, that has been reissued by Fantasy. Each tune serves as a suitable vehicle for intense musical exploration.
Of the BE trio lineups, my favorite is the 1st trio, of course, followed by the Marc Johnson-era which I really love. This would be my 3rd favorite, but at this level of mastery, there's but a hair's breadth from gold medal to bronze.
The recording itself suffers slightly, as it seems to be a stereo restoration of a mono stage mix. The piano is reasonably captured and sounds natural, not full. However, Eddie's bass is weak and airy, as if distant miked. This contrasts with the super present, in your face, dry Marc Johnson tone of the later trio, which I personally prefer. Regardless, Eddie's delightful style and bow technique are enjoyable and entertaining.
Not much stereo sound stage here, but I believe the tracking was limited, to be fair.
It is pointless to spend time talking about the sonics, when the level of musical genius transcends all of that. Just sit back and enjoy a great trio record and memorable performance from the mid 70s.
Pressing is good. 180g vinyl is a plus. Recommended. - Keep it coming, this sounds great but doesn’t have the sound stage the recent RSD London release but still top notch performance and quiet disk
