This one is my favourite FI record but my pressing at least isn’t the best. It’s far from unlistenable but it’s noisy on the drop, and lacks a little definition.

The quality of this tape leaves a lot to be desired. The shell is very standard, as we come to expect from modern cassette releases. The tape itself is ferric, of course, and while it sounds very acceptable in terms of frequency response and hiss, there are massive regular dropouts which start to get louder and louder as side A reaches the end (and, vice versa, get softer as side B progresses). This is very audible in Cave and unbearable in Through The Roses.

Looking at the tape one can see the culprit: the tape is sort-of indented at regular intervals, instead of being smooth. Winding it all to the end shows why: the one centimeter where the ferric tape is connected to the leader tape is a lot thicker than the rest, and I suspect this has been pushed through a good part of the tape as it was spooled up tightly. Bummer – I hope this is a one-off production hiccup; I will see if I can get a replacement and will update when I know more.

The packaging is quite nice though, and it includes an extra slipcase around the standard cassette case. The artwork and J-card look good. Also, I really like this album, musically.

There is no Dolby noise reduction applied.

How come nobody has commented on how loud and distorted this disc is? verging on unlistenable... Is the vinyl any better?

Came with a sticker: LIMITED EDITION 180 GRAM WHITE VINYL, but my LP is the standard black version.

Some black lines on one side of mine, doesn't spoil the enjoyment though, lovely sound and beautiful, beautiful songs, loving this! Playing it is making me want to see them live!

Are we talking about the US copy here? My US copy was a nice flat pressing loaded with very audible ticks and pops throughout both sides, and on side two it had non-fill on one of the tracks. My copy is anything BUT a clean quiet pressing. Cleaned it on a Hannl RCM BTW, and played it on a SOTA Star Sapphire with Origin Live Silver arm and Soundsmith Hyperion cartridge. This copy goes back!
