Async is an emotional journey of the legendary composer Ryuichi Sakamoto coming to terms with death. Throat cancer sadly took his life six years later but this album deeply conveys the lived experience of knowing that time is precious.

The impermanence of life is best represented in the albums spoken word poetry. Life, Life, recites a poem by Andrei Tarkovsky's father Arseny Tarkovsky spoken by life-long collaborator David Sylvian. When describing the album, Sylvian summed it up nicely as “a work that sings of mortality and expresses a love and gratitude for life, accompanied by the knowledge of its fragility". The label Milan described Async as the soundtrack for an imaginary movie by Andrei Tarkovsky.

Fullmoon begins with a quote from Paul Bowles reading his novel The Sheltering Sky over a sine wave. "Because we don’t know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20. And yet it all seems limitless."

The heavy use of church organ also coveys the emotional setting of funeral music, especially on Andata, Zure, Stakra and Solari, which I consider to be one of Sakamoto's most sad, touching and timeless songs to date. So much modern music lacks emotion or purpose but here we see a lifelong musician who reached a point in his musical journey where he can so effortlessly convey feelings and emotions with the sound of one note or frequency.

A few sections are fairly noisy, but I'm not sure if that's due to handling since I lugged this back in my carryon on an international flight. The vinyl-exclusive track sounds pretty good at least.

haven't played this yet but i was disappointed to see that this is a new lacquer cut by tohru kotetsu at JVC, and that this reissue doesn't use the original chris bellman metal parts. that said, it should still be good, hopefully.

EDIT: finally played it after a month. toyokasei's black vinyl is horrendously noisy these days, and this is unfortunately no exception. lacquer cut seems decent but not exceptional. packaging is a nice tip-on gatefold jacket. overall, i'm a bit disappointed in this reissue. this is a great album which deserves better quality than this.

Unfortunately my Milan pressing of this isn't great. I'm curious to hear the reviews of this 2024 Commons reissue from Japan.

Not a good pressing at all, a lot of surface noise...
Very disapointed, at this stage, you might as well listen to the Hi-res version, which has no surface noise at all!
              Don't buy it!

My copy of this pressing sounds nothing short of fantastic. With music by an artist such as Sakamoto you want to hear every little nuance, and this pressing definitely allows that. Thick and sturdy sleeve and nice polylined inners as a bonus. Really happy with this one.

                Rest in peace Mr. Sakamoto

I received my copy yesterday, and it was a terrible disappointment. First two tracks on both sides of the first lp had lots (and I realy mean that) of crackles and sibilant sounds that were visually hard to detect and which were clearly caused by an inferior press quality. Also cleaning with my HumminGuru ultrasonic cleaning device did not result in any kind of improvement, and so I had to send the album back. I don't know if this was a single misprint, because many customers seem to be very happy with that reissue. I surely wasn't.

This is one of my favorite pieces of music ever written. Sakamoto at his greatest and most vulnerable. Also, this pressing is the one. If you have it, keep it and never let it go.

It's good. Very good. I forgot I was spinning a record a couple times. The discs are flat and centered - Side D had one pop but no other audible or visual defects otherwise. Really great release and I recommend anyone who's been eyeing it jump on it before the scalpers take advantage.

I wish it came with some extra artwork but honestly for $44.99 CAD, it's a great purchase.
