- Edited one month agoAlbum Revolution #3:
Since 1969 (starting with "Walking In Space"), "Quincy Jones" has EMBARKED on a SERIOUSLY new direction in Music...He decided to combine his love for "Jazz" and "Orchestra", and bring it into a WHOLE NEW WORLD of "Fusion" and "POP"....But, he never strayed from what he did well, still doing "Movie Scores" like; "The Italian Job", "The Lost Man" and follow up to "In The Heat Of The Night", "They Call Me Mister Tibbs"....
Even with ALL THAT going on, "Q's" taste for what's next CONTINUED to wet his appetite!!!! With that, we go into his next "A&M Records" offering, "Smackwater Jack"....
Just like the last 2 albums, "Q" RELIED VERY HEAVY on the talents of GREAT Artists like; "Eric Gale", "Freddie Hubbard", "Hubert Laws", "Toots Thielemans" and "Valerie Simpson", along with a HOST of other GREAT Musicians and Vocalists....He also REFUSED not to have his MIGHTY, MIGHTY "Orchestra", which continued to be PARAMOUNT to his sound....
With that in mind, we start with the "Carole King /Gerry Goffin" pinned "Title Track"..."Q" BRAVELY handled the Lead Vocals here...Now, let's be honest, "Q" didn't have the best Vocals, but when he did go there, it STILL WORKED...His Vocals were PERFECT for this "Country Funk" Piece, having the Background support of "Barbara Massey", "Joshie Armstead", "Maretha Stewart", "Marilyn Jackson" and "Valerie Simpson"....
"Cast Your Fate To The Wind", Written by the ONE and ONLY, "Vince Guaraldi", has a Smooth and Groovy touch...."Q's" wavy hands directs the "Orchestra" PERFECTLY, while the Pianos, Guitar and Flugelhorn Solos (courtesy of "Bobby Scott", "Eric Gale" and "Marvin Stamm") STUNS your Musical Brain...I have heard this Piece done COUNTLESS times (Including the Original), and I have yet to be DISAPPOINTED!!!
AWWW Yeah!!!! "Ironside (Theme From "Ironside"; NBC-TV)" though....
Hey, I LOVED the TV Show, with "Mr. Perry Mason" himself "Raymond Burr", when I was a Kid...So to find out that "Q" was responsible for this BOMB!!!!, RIGHTEOUS!!!! "Q" PULLED out ALL THE STOPS here!!!! Along with his "Orchestra" Groovin', he had "Freddie Hubbard", "Hubert Laws", and "Jerome Richardson", GETTIN' DOWN on the Flute and Horns!!!! This is defiantly one of my "Isaac D. Body Sway" joints!!!!!!
"Q's Vision" for the "Marvin Gaye" MASTERPIECE, "What's Going On?", is a OOOOHHHHH!!!!!! "Q" invited ALL of his Friends on this one; "Freddie Hubbard", "Hubert Laws", "Toots Thielemans", "Jim Hall" on Guitar, "Milt Jackson" on Vibes, "Harry Lookofsky" on Violin, also "Barbara Massey", "Joshie Armstead", "Maretha Stewart", "Marilyn Jackson" and "Valerie Simpson" on Vocals...It stands to reason, because "Q" turned this tune into a 9 minute OPUS...."Q" also GRACED us with Lead Vocals....Again Orchestra meets "Fusion".....
"Theme From "The Anderson Tapes" was the Sound Score for the Movie starring, "Sean Connery", "Dyan Cannon", "Martin Balsam", "Alan King" and "Christopher Walken"....It's ANOTHER Groovy joint, that definitely FITS the Movie...The STARS on this one to me is the Vibes by "Milt Jackson" and Moog Synthesizer by "Edd Kalehoff"...Again, "Q" is a PURE MASTER of stuff like this!!!!!!
"Brown Ballad" is a nice Moody "Ballad"...."Q" gave "Toots Thielemans" the green light to just TEAR UP this BEAUTIFUL Piece with the Harmonica, while "Bobby Scott" (Piano), and "Jim Hall" (Guitar) just soothes on the Track..."Q" kept this one simple....
"Hikky-Burr" was the "Theme From "The Bill Cosby Show" on "NBC-TV", that came out between 1969-1971....This is another Groovy joint, that had "Q's" Friends ("Eric Gale", "Freddie Hubbard", "Hubert Laws" and "Toots Thielemans") doing THEIR THANG!!!! "Bill Cosby" (who helped "Q" Write it as well), can be heard doing "Hikky-Burr" Scats....Now, I know how People feel about "Bill Cosby" these days, but before we knew what happened, "Bill" was a talented Comedian (according to taste), who also had a profound love of Music..."Q" helped him to get some of it out....
The final Piece, "Guitar Blues Odyssey: From Roots To Fruits" showcased "Quincy's" love for the Instrument...With help from "Eric Gale", "Toots Thielemans" and "Jim Hall", these MASTERFUL Guitarists helped us Groove!!!!! This joint goes to different phases, from "Old Time Spiritual" to "Jazzy", to "STRAIGHT UP FUNKY", to "Psychedelic ROCK"!!!!! The ending is also FANTASTIC, having the Guitarists go into the "Fusion" and "Blues" part of the Piece...Man, "Q" was just a GENIUS!!!!!!
For some reason I was intimated by this album...But once I put my fears aside, I LOST MY MIND!!!! "Q" was TRULY starting to EXPAND his sound, and as time goes on, he would get MORE and MORE AMBITIOUS Musically....
With that in tow, "Smackwater Jack" just continued to add to a truly FRUITFUL Catalog..... - Edited 10 months ago

A pleasant well-arranged jazzy big band progressive funky soul ride from one of jazz’s musical geniuses with a stellar cast list that leaves one's ears wiggling. One of Quincy's better more blaxploitation infused sets.
A wonderful hip & groovy surprise. - Edited 7 years ago

Does anyone else have a volume drop a couple of minutes into What's going on, in this pressing? I think I have one from a bad batch, also the levels and panning go crazy during Guitar Blues Odyssey, I just compared with another pressing and it is not there at all... - Lovely album! I only get in on these tracks long after they were hits (born in the 80s, hmmm)... soul bossa nova in austin powers, ironside in kill bill... seriously I have some digging to do here cause quincys archive is seriously littered with some culture defining gems.

This musician is awfully well known but this exact album is just wonderful and the very best to me.
