Reviews
- The first part of the triptych. More crossover, less jazz than the others. The two part motive in the first and final part of the title piece reminds me of Carla Bley's Lawns. Brilliant solo piano by Rainer Brüninghaus, an overlooked master. This album aged very well.

One of ECM’s greatest albums. A nice pressing as well!- This is not jazz - it's simply sublime music that transcends any one musical genre, and incorporates intriguing elements of many. It has a lush, sweeping cinematic sound that is careful not to be overly epic. Yes, this could be an Oscar-worthy soundtrack - if there ever was a film to match its greatness.
With one caveat: you need to find an absolutely clean copy to stay immersed in it's aura. Some of the album's most beautiful moments are nestled in near silence. I've gone through several over years, only to recently discover my go-to.
In short, a must-have in anyone's collection. - Edited 8 months agoOne of those releases that proves time and time again how creative a musician can be beyond ones own genre "cage". Weber known for his unique approach and sound on the electric string bass (one of his own design and build btw) carved out a refined and timeless pseudo jazz masterpiece. I use pseudo jazz because this music does not bow its head to bop, fusion or the disco-y jazz that started to emerge by the mid 1970s.
This is spacious, quiet and slow churning mood music in the best possible sense. You might call it ambient jazz perhaps but what you get is an earful of musicians painting lush brushstrokes of sound and actually listening to one another's performance as they add their own "colour" to the compositions. Seriously this is amazing music that never seems to get old or sound crusty and has been. Its ECM and Weber in their finest of moments. - Edited 5 years agoIn a sense, this jazzy 1974 Kraut-release is a true oddity in my collection, as I’m mainly a wave/punk/ industrial kind of guy. But I happen to like the melancholic mood of this album a LOT, and above all it has an additional special meaning to me.
I accidentally discovered that the music has a beautiful effect on my severely autistic, non-verbal son. Whenever I put it on, he clearly slows down, inadvertently starts paying attention to the sounds he hears coming from the speakers, and it seems that he sort of “relaxes” a bit, deviating from his usual hyperactive, tense nature. I suspect he really “feels” the record’s soothing atmosphere and enjoys the unobtrusive but engaging fretless double-bass melodies. Every time there’s a little bit of magic in the air, and obviously one doesn’t necessarily need to be highly sophisticated to “feel” it. Only a handful of records have this effect on my special boy, and that’s what makes this particular one a pure treasure.
Thank you for these precious moments, Herr Weber.
