Starday Records – SLP-199 (1962)
Twelve Starday selections of great honky tonk from Frankie Miller. Personal highlights include A Little Bit's Better, True Blue, Big Talk Of The Town, Maybe You Would Love Me Then, Prison Grey, It's Not Easy, The Money Side Of Life, and The Picture At St. Helene.
Recording sessions for the Starday materials occurred in different places. All were produced by Tommy Hill. The first session took place in 1956 at the Gold Star Recording Studio in Houston, Texas, with Glenn Barber (lead gt), Norman Miller [gt/percussion], Jimmy Robinson [steel], Hezzie Bryant [bass], Henry Bennett [fiddle], and Jack Kennedy [piano]). The masters were purchased by Starday and mastered in January 1959.
The next two sessions were in July and December 1959 at Bradley Film and Recording Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. The musicians were Tommy Hill (guitar and harmony vocals), Grady Martin (guitar and banjo), Bobby Garrett and Jimmy Day (steel), Lightnin Chance and Junior Husky (bass), Buddy Harman (drums), and Hargus Robbins (piano).
The final sessions were all at Starday SoundStudeo, Nashville, Tennessee. They took place in June, July, 1960, and April and September 1961. The musicians were Hank Garland and Jerry Shook (guitar), Bob Meadows and Pete Drake (steel), Jimmy Riddle (harmonica), Hargus Robbins and Dean Manuel (piano), Kelso Herston (banjo), and Darrell McCall and Tompall and the Glaser Brothers (harmony vocals).
