Notes

Fans of the album, record stores, and Planet Mu's official site state that the title of this release is "Expert Knob Twiddlers". The Planet Mu site says : "… Mike & Rich’s 'Expert Knob Twiddlers' was made back in 1994. Richard edited the tracks into shape later in 1996 with his new Apple Mac computer and it was released later that year on Rephlex …". This text is not an instance of retrofitting; 'Expert Knob Twiddlers' was the title upon the original release in 1996. The cover of the Japanese CD version and the catalogue summaries included inside Caustic Window - Compilation and The Braindance Coincidence list this release by the artist name only. The cover is a parody of the box cover of "Downfall", a vertical board game by Milton Bradley.

This begins and ends with Mr. Frosty. A great (really) downtempo track. The rest of the album is hit and miss, and is definitely (certain) mood music...

One of the few Richard releases that really doesn't do very much to me. The joke certainly works, but only for a couple of tracks. The first track on this release is actually very good. But after that this album soon dissolves into bland, repetitive silliness. The bonus material on this specific release is a joke at itself. Compared to the more sophisticated Richard releases (and I know, Mike participated in this one too), this is Sunday afternoon turd after a very drunken night.

Get the feeling that Upright Kangaroo was inspired a bit from Roger Waters' Our Song.

Expert Knob Twiddlers was not the title upon release. It was simply Mike & Rich by Mike & Rich. We decided to call it Expert Knob Twiddlers for the reissue because everyone called it that.

They've found a few copies of the cassette and blue vinyl over at the Planet Mu bleepstore, but are not selling them cheap. However, there's a sale on at the moment, so if you're prepared to pay collector rates, might as well get it from Planet Mu/Bleep themselves. https://planetmu.bleepstores.com/release/74321-mike-rich-expert-knob-twiddlers

I didn't like this. I bought it off a beach vendor on Brighton seafront for a tenner in the early 00's, I kind of felt bad because he clearly didn't know it was going for 3 times as much on ebay back then. However as I didn't like it I actually went into Rounder Records in Brighton and asked them if they'd swap it for the copy of The Advent - Elements of Life which they had going for £30 and had been there for at least a year, they did a quick ebay search and agreed! So yeah I didn't like this one :)

Surprisingly fast delivery from Planet Mu website.... I certainly did not expect it to be a single pocket jacket supporting three LPs at once. Could have a risk of severe split seams, but luckily didn't happen to me. The LPs are regular weight (140g maybe), a couple of static sides due to the black paper sleeves, but other than that, I'm very happy with this pressing. Mastering was handled by Beau Thomas, who has been cutting some AFX releases since Syro, and, well, the source material for this one may sound digitally rough, but I think he handled it well. No download code, at least not in my copy, but since I bought from Planet Mu Bleepstore, the purchase already comes with bundled lossless files for download.

PS: the high pitch thing at Jelly Fish scares the shit out of me every time

At the time to me it sounded a bit like left over Jake Slazenger tracks that either Warp or Clear didn't want and Richard threw in a couple of random rough draft tracks to fill it out. I know there are heaps of people who love it but as an owner of pretty much everything these guys have put out over the years this album is the least played out of all of them for me. Great cover though!
