referencing Late Train 2 Bentley On C (12") SKINT 13
Second EP from Bentley Rhythm Ace containing pilot versions of three tracks that would go on to feature on their debut album.
"Late Train To Bentley On C" is a good pilot version of "Mind That Gap" that perfectly embodied the BRA template of experimental yet accessible big beat. Features John Baker's Radiophonic Workshop boings from "Brio". (7)
"Whoosh" had all the ingredients for a fine single: spacey BBC Radiophonic Workshop sound effects, jolly German Oompah riffs, a supremely funky bassline, a catchy scat chorus (lifted from Ohio Knox's country-rock "Calamity Jane") and a quirky "Whoosh" vocal (from The Upsetters' dub reggae "Black Panta"). The version here is an early demo that was let down by clunky percussion and a raw climax, but the Bentley's would fix it for the album. (6)
"Return of Carboot Techno Disco" is an even more madcap version of the drum & bass track that first appeared on their previous EP, and is very similar to the subsequent album version. (7)
Exclusive to this release is "The Man With The Golden Toast", calypso-reggae big beat based around the intro to the Button Down Brass's "Somethin' Stupid". (6)
