Love the vibe, but won't be on regular rotation. While it has a few bangers, and those are good, the ballad to banger ratio skews too heavily ballad for me to leave spinning on the reg.

        Album Revolution #1:

        "Heatwave"....WHAT A BAND!!!!

When I talk about the GOOD "Disco" (besides "The Bee Gees" or "Chic"), "Heatwave" is one of those Bands that you HAVE to talk about...Throughout the '70's, this FANTASTIC Band POURED OUT some of the BEST Bangers heard, while ALSO giving us some of the BEST Slow Jams as well.....

The roots of the Band starts with "Dayton, Ohio" Brothers, "Keith Wilder" and "Johnnie Wilder Jr."....With "Johnnie" leaving the "Army" overseas, he was in "England" where he met, who would be one of the MOST GIFTED Composers EVER in, "Rod Temperton"....They toured together for a while, then decided to REALLY get SERIOUS and start what would be become, "Heatwave"...

The members rounded out to be, Both "Wilder" Brothers (Vocals), "Temperton" (keyboards), "Roy Carter" (Guitar), "Mario Mantese" (Bass), "Ernest "Bilbo" Berger" (Drums), and "Eric Johns" (Guitar).....Along with Producer, "Barry Blue", the Band, TOGETHER brought about one of the BEST albums in 1977, "Too Hot To Handle"....

Now, I do understand that Overseas, the album was Released on the "GTO" Label in 1976....But to us Folks over in the States, we were BLASTED with this ULTIMATE CROWN JEWEL BOMB of an album in '77 on "Epic Records"...That's also why I am STUBBORNLY showing this album cover....It was the album cover that I have come to LOVE!!!!!!

Ok, FINALLY getting ALL THAT out the way, the album starts with the BANGING "Title Track"....From the START, you just KNEW!!! From the RIGHTEOUS Groove, to the HEAVY Keyboards and Horns, if you wasn't on the "Disco Dancefloor", you were OUT OF TOUCH!!!!!

The next BOMB was the ULTIMATE "Disco" Groove in "Boogie Nights"....Starting out in "Jazz" form, it just USHERED you onto the "Dancefloor"....Besides the PERFECT Keyboard LAID Groove, the Vocals of the "Wilder" Brothers brings a DISTINCT sound, that will just make you say WOW!!!!! I also LOVE how the Groove and Vocals FLOATS and FADES to the next TRIP!!!!

That TRIP was "Ain't No Half Steppin'"....Another HEAVY Keyboard Groove, again, you are CAPTURED by just how "Heatwave" DELIVERS their brand of "Dance Music"...The Musical changes and Drum Kicks CARRIES this one!!!! It also has such a SMOOTH allure, that "Big Daddy Kane" used it to INSPIRE his own version of the joint!!!!! PRICELESS!!!!!

        "Always And Forever" though....

Where do I BEGIN?!?!?!?!?! I just don't think (to this day) that People realize how POWERFUL this song IS!!!!! For almost 50 years, even though there are TONS of MASTERFUL Slow Jams, "Always And Forever" has become the ULTIMATE BLUEPRINT!!!!!! "Johnnie" REALLY set himself up as one of the Vocalists that People wanted to IMITATE!!!!

The Music was SOOO BEAUTIFUL, while STILL being able to stay with the "Heatwave" sound!!!! You want to talk about a Song being USED at Weddings?!?!?!?! There was even Sheet Music of this joint at Wedding Shops!!!!! I would not have BELIEVED IT if I didn't SEE IT with my OWN EYES!!!!!

That was just the 1st Side Folks.....

Side 2 goes back to Groovin' in the form of "Super Soul Sister"...It wasn't really a "Disco" joint, but it was STILL great to Dance to!!!! It still has that HEAVY Keyboard laid Groove, with GREAT Drum Kicks....I wonder if this was where "Train" got the inspiration for "Hey, Soul Sister"? Oh well, who knows!!!!!!

"All You Do Is Dial" is a Mellow Groovy "Jazzy" joint...Again, "Johnnie" just DELIVERS, ESPECIALLY in High Register Vocals...This is the PERFECT joint to show the SMOOTHER side of the Band....

"Lay It On Me" continues the Groovy Keyboard ASSULT!!! By the time you get to this point of the album, you are NO LONGER SUPRISED how "Heatwave" DELIVERS Songs LIKE THIS!!!!!

"Sho'nuff Must Be Luv" is another "Johnnie" Slow Jam Groove....Another LOVELY song, you just got to GRAB your Love One and just Slow Dance!!!!!

"Beat Your Booty" makes me LAUGH EVERYTIME I HEAR IT!!!! I remember those days when I used to get those "Whooping's"...Now, I know that things are done DIFFERENTLY these days, but BACK THEN, that form of Discipline was how it was done...To People in my age group, WE GET IT!!!!!!, and WE GOT IT!!!!! (LOL!!!!)

Well, this album (as I said earlier) was BLASTED EVERYWHERE!!!! On Radio, Stereos, from People's Windows, even on Television...."Heatwave" WAS EVERYWHERE!!!!!

I have to give a SUPER DOOPER NOD to the Songwriting of the ONE and ONLY "Rod Temperton"...It was BECAUSE of his Grooves, that "Heatwave" became the POWERHOUSE Band that they WERE!!!! But, I also have to give it up to the ONE and ONLY "Johnnie Wilder Jr." as well!!!! He was the DRIVING FORCE of the Band!!!! Using his Military Background, his Rehearsals WHIPPED the Band into SHAPE!!!! It may have caused a fight or 2 at times, but the Band LOVED the RESULTS!!!!!!

So, starting an Album Revolution from the start, "Heatwave", may have BROKE DOWN DOORS, but they also CAPTURED OUR HEARTS!!!!!!

Very lovely pressings, stunning purple marble vinyl. Both flat, both quiet just like the Central Heating reissue from MOV. Gatefold would have made it a 10, instead its merely excellent

Side one of this classic is essentially a greatest hits package on its own. Side two isn't a slouch either, although "Beat Your Booty" is obvious filler (okay listenable filler, but it's nowhere on par with the first four preceding songs on side two. The "Aww damn" moment I dread with seemingly near-perfect albums.) Overall, this is a classic distillation of funk, pop-soul. and disco that deserves its full props. Plus, this marked the beginnings of one of the mighty demigods of pop and soul songcraft, the late great Rod Temperton. As a little kid, I didn't know anything about the man or the grand summation of his work as a songwriter, keyboardist, and producer at the time, it blew my mind how well-crafted and catchy the funk/soul juggernauts were. One key moment of this album that always stuck out for me was the beginning and end of "Boogie Nights," where the band broke out into a timed swing jazz chart with the harp flourishes, before and after breaking into the relentless funk groove. What a risk. Those risky moves gave credence to Temperton's extraordinary mastery of writing songs with traditional jazz leanings within a contemporary subtext. It set the perfect template for Temperton's songcraft approach.

This record is really underestimated. A mixture of magnificent harmony and inner power make it resonate. Full amplitude production is incredibly precise and the musicians' mastery is perfect. For 8 or 10 euros on DIscogs in perfect condition it's a delicious treat for the ears.
