- This 24-bit 192-kHz remaster, issued 62 (!) years after its debut, and 66 (!) years after being recorded, sounds amazing. The clarity, dynamics, and mix are perfect. The soundstage is very wide and deep, making speakers nearly disappear. This sounds like a High Dynamic Range album, I don't think there's any compression at all.

Punchy DMM mono pressing, highly recommended for fans of mono listening.- My copy doesn’t have “in walked bud” listed as a track on the side A label of the disc itself. But the track is indeed the last track on side A. It is listed on the back of the sleeve as well.

Quick primer on audio quality:
1947 recordings were made direct to disk just like before WW2. The masters are not tape so there are artifacts baked in--distortion and noises. Some issues of this material cut the treble to reduce the artifacts. Some use digital processing to reduce them.
1948, 1949 and 1951 and 1952 recordings were made to tape, but most of these sound primitive as well.
Still, the sound Prestige got on their 1952 recordings is a great leap forward and if you want to hear early Monk in good sound, that is where you should start. The 10" collection, or Thelonious Monk Trio (OJC) or the 1972 two-fer PR 24006 is where you can find those sessions.- I can only assume RodriRodriguez is not familiar with these recordings. These 1947/48 recordings, some made direct to disc like pre-war recordings, have never been modern high fidelity (though they qualified in the era of shellac, when they were put out). However these 10"s by Grundmann and Bellman, though derived from HD digital, are sourced from the original tape and disc sources and sound great compared to any version from the 60s forward (I haven't heard originals). Other versions are both too harsh and nonetheless muddy. This sounds like music, lo-fi, to be true, but musical.
- Edited 2 years agoOn paper, this compilation really hits the mark, having many of Monk's most well-known compositions. Sadly, the selected recordings are not impressive overall. I much prefer hearing monks quartet with Charlie Rouse playing these heads.
The recordings are mostly fairly rough with unnatural sounding instruments, especially the vibes. Piano at times clips heavily, such as on Mysterioso and others. The last tune, "Hmph" is a great bebop and probably my favorite of the bunch. referencing Genius Of Modern Music (Volume One) (LP, Compilation, Reissue, Remastered, Mono, 180 g) 4535336
I think this record is fantastic. Sonically, it's not the best, but Kevin Gray has mastered this with so much charm. Brilliant.referencing Genius Of Modern Music (Volume One) (LP, Compilation, Reissue, Remastered, Mono, 180 g) 4535336
The word essential gets thrown a lot when referring to classic jazz records but this is one title that really deserves to be nominated in that kind of conversation.
Cutting edge music for the time and yes I think the word genius (another word thrown around far too often) really does apply to Mr.Thelonious Monk…
Of course the original recording was always going to be a challenge for any modern remaster to wring any extra fidelity out of the master tapes so all I’m going to say is that this is about as good as this will ever sound. The pressing was perfect, no noise or defects.
This is one of those records where the quality of the music is far far more important than how good it sounds.referencing Genius Of Modern Music (Volume One) (LP, Compilation, Reissue, Remastered, Mono, 180 g) 4535336
Beautifully mastered by KG. No doubt this was difficult source material that probably wasn’t recorded very well at the time but the quality is incredible as is the body and soul of the music. A must have.referencing Genius Of Modern Music (Volume One) (LP, Compilation, Reissue, Remastered, Mono, 180 g) 4535336
I have two questions for you.
Do you think that this 2022 vinyl pressing has a better sound quality than the 1994 US Blue Note CD?
Does the sound of this vinyl sound more natural than the 1994 US Blue Note CD?
Thanks in advance for your comments.
