- I have always wondered what the story is behind this release. The first three on VHU were all massive, to the point that each one was licensed for separate remix EPs on BZRK. VHU 4 was quite popular, and VHU 5 even more so. By comparison, the original Spiky EP (VHU 6) - is kinda average, and so didn't have the same impact.
Which makes it a little odd that they followed it up with a triple pack of remixes! Maybe they anticipated bigger things for the original? Or maybe they just wanted to build on their earlier success by getting some big names in for remixes. Either way, I'm glad they did.
I would say that most of them are in effect remixes of the whole EP, using elements from more than one of the original tracks. Dano's remix even uses the main riff from a previous VHU track (Wasting Program - Bring That Shit Back). Out of the bunch, my favourites would be DJ Rob & Tim B (which adds a brand new, happy-ish main riff), the aforementioned Dano mix (a lively 200+ bpm stormer), Lenny Dee & Micalizzi (which in the fine tradition of Lenny's remixes, barely sounds like the original) - and maybe the biggest surprise, the Rexanthony mix, which is similar to his track "Kawtrone", and replays the original's whistling sample on some classic midi strings. Ultimately, whilst twelve remixes could seem like overkill, there isn't really a bad one among them, and they cover a nice range.
And as a bonus, the original EP (and thus a couple of these remixes) has maybe one of the most surprising rap samples in any hardcore EP - "I'm the kid that made delinquency an art", from..."Do The Bartman". - Edited 15 years agoThis vinyl has an incorrect information about A2 track. It's in fact a remix of "Whistling Whistling" as it's correctly listed in Thunderdome XV.
