Notes
This is volume-1 of a two series set, recorded live by the jazz musicians signed to CBS in 1977. Various - Montreux Summit - Volume 2.
This was a short-lived project to follow-on from, and capitalize on the CTI All-Stars. When Creed Taylor, Inc. started to have financial problems that eventually led to its bankruptcy, CBS/Columbia picked off its stars, starting with Bob James, who had been a house arranger and successful recording artist with CTI. Others followed including Hubert Laws.
James was the Executive Producer for this recording, and it's listed as a "Tappan Zee Production". Tappan Zee Records, Inc. was Bob James company and Tappan Zee Records imprint at CBS/Columbia as part of the deal he made to switch labels. Columbia staff producer Jay Chattaway was quoted in Billboard Magazine, June 18th, 1977 saying "CBS is side stepping the term all-star in describing the players on the LP" and would "rather retain the identity of the individual players, we also don't like to use the term all-star because it's dated and is so small label sounding."

- Wonder what this sounds like? A bunch of dudes taking solos? One of those “all star” messes...? Dexter, Woody and Golson - together with Getz and Ferguson on most of the tracks... playing “together” or?
- Edited 6 years agoThis and volume two of montreux summit are amazing double lp's, highly recommended as you can find both for an affordable price easily. :)
