Dwight Trible taps into the tradition of assigning lyrics to existing jazz standards. He has a beautiful baritone singing voice, but he's deep in both senses of the word. You might be reminded a little bit of Johnny Hartman or Leon Thomas or Billy Eckstein, but Trible is very much his own man, with great presence and good taste in tunes. The disc impresses with deft interpretations of John Coltrane’s “Wise One” and “Africa,” Wayne Shorter’s “Footprints,” Abdullah Ibrahim’s “Ishmael” and Freddie Hubbard’s “Little Sunflower.”
