- The artistry is definitely reference, and during the quiet and "normal" sections, the sound quality is excellent, amazingly clear and nuanced. That said, during loud passages, there is an odd "ringing" which is quite unpleasant. I cannot tell if it's due to the original recording exceeding the capabilities of the tapes, or if it's due to a remastering mistake. Most tracks are a delight to listen to, but loud sections (like toward the end of disc 2, Estampes L.100-1 Pagodes and L.100-3 Jardins sous la pluie, the hammering of the piano grates. I've tried both the cd and sacd layers, on 2 different dacs, and the result is the same.
