Pleasantly surprising. This is the Nip I remember being enthralled by when I bought my first XXL my freshman year of high school. This was when I thought Nip was dope before I ever even moved to Crenshaw a year later. This was when Nip wrote and man this dude's pen game was strong. No "nigga" punctuations as he did in his future "off da dome" - style more publicized tapes. If Nip would have kept writing, this tape shows how dope he could have been. The stories relate to what I went through in my teens in Crenshaw - from getting kicked out by my moms to getting in that thunderdome (getting jumped in) in 60's hood ("Pistol On My Lap"). "Makin Them Swerves" describes drug dealing in L.A. (as I remember from being around my Inglewood Fam brother-in-law), "Dre Jackin For Beats" shows what Nip would sound like over the West Coast's most recognized producer, and "Closer Than Close" is the sleeper hit with a fire sample, while "Black Superman" serves as THE posse cut of the record.
With drops from Power 106 DJ's that take me back to my teenage years in The LAnd, "Bullets ... Vol.1" is Nip's best record and shows why he was such a prospect back when he wrote down his rhymes and didn't switch his style to free form spoken word.
