I got this vinyl pressing (Stax SX2 021 double LP - West Germany 1989) from Acoustic Sounds recently, kind of by accident. I thought it was the West German first pressing, but I must have goofed. As it turns out, it's a 1989 UK/European direct metal master reissue (On the back cover, lower right, it says "Direct metal mastered from digital tapes"). When I first noticed it was a DMM pressing (and also NOT the West German FIRST pressing), I was more than a little worried, having heard some, but it's actually a lot better than I expected. For starters, it's got BIG bass. Very-punchy and dynamic. That's the first thing I noticed. The drums and bass really hit you, and the horns are very-tight. The mids and highs seem kind of like a cross between the German and Japanese mastering styles, but without the overly-pristine, lifeless quality of a lot of the old Japanese LP's (like the Japanese "All Things Must Pass"). I haven't heard the UK first pressing yet or the West German first pressing for that matter, so I can't speak for how this one compares to them. However, it definitely has more punch and bigger bass than the 2014 Stax double LP reissue I recently posted about on here. That's not to say I don't like the 2014 reissue. I actually like it a lot. I'm gonna spend more time listening to both and see if I can't get a better sense of what I like and don't like about both, but I'm betting that those who've only heard the US 1st pressing LP so far would end up liking this West German one better. I'll need to keep listening and try and get a better sense of how it compares to the other pressings.

Regarding the vinyl versions of this, avoid the US 1st pressing. From what I have been read, it was mastered way too hot and in your face. The UK and West German 1st pressings get the most raves in terms of the original vinyl. The 2014 Stax/Concord reissue 2LP sounds great as well. That one really surprised me. I posted a separate review for that version. I also picked up the Stax/Fantasy reissue LP of "Hot Buttered Soul" (the one that sells for like $20). Great sound on that as well, especially considering the price ("Walk On By" sounds wide, airy, open, and engaging... Really draws you in... Great lead and backing vocals). I plan to get the Stax "Black Moses" reissue as well, and hopefully it's as nice as the "Shaft" set. I played both of them on an idler-driven Dual 1019 from the late '60's, and they responded nicely to it. Should do well on tube AND solid state gear. You won't find much real info about these reissues online, aside from the general stuff. No big write-up about how they were mastered or how heavy the vinyl is, but don't sweat it. Mine sound great and play quiet (The "Shaft" reissue seems like a legitimate 180g HQ release, with a nice, high-quality gatefold cover, faithful to the original in terms of its feel... The "Hot Buttered Soul" reissue has a single, non-gatefold-type cover that is more in line with its price, and the vinyl seems to have a slightly-lighter weight/feel to it, but it was well-centered and quiet. No complaints on the sound.

I picked up a copy of this recently and really like it a lot (Mine is just a black-vinyl version of the purple-vinyl edition listed here... Same mastering). I couldn't find a thing about it online (or on the cover plastic for that matter), so I was really skeptical, but this one is a winner. I still don't know how it was mastered or by who, but spin it a few times, and you will forget all about that. The US 1st pressing was apparently mastered way-too-hot and sounds congested. This reissue does not. And yet, it's warm, lively, and engaging, with great, very-analog-sounding bass. A very-enjoyable listen. I have a West German 1st pressing double LP on the way, and I can't say whether this will or will not outperform that (because I haven't heard it yet), but this is a very-solid reissue. The cover is a thick, well-made gatefold-type, similar to the old one inside and out, and the sound is on par with what I would expect from a full-on analog reissue. Great bass and dynamics, smooth highs, and a rich, full midrange. I ordered the "Hits From Sh/aft" 3-song LP (Mastered by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman) shortly after, and I think that will make a great companion piece to this reissue, and I say that because the best-sounding tracks on the Stax reissue double LP are the instrumental ones, while the "Hits" 3-song comp focuses on really squeezing the most quality possible out of the three vocal selections. But even without the "Hits" comp, this Stax 2LP reissue is a no-brainer.And my copy is quiet too. And furthermore, it sounds great on my old, idler-driven Dual 1019 (An early '70's 1229 or 1219 would be perfect... This reissue doesn't seem out of place at all, so fear not about worrying if you would need a modern table to wake this one up). Definitely-not what I was expecting. Not at all. VERY-impressed.

It makes no sense for an album to be this great, and if it was against the law, then Ike would have served a life sentence!! Just like Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly", "Shaft" was the bomb!!PERIOD!!! It wasns't like Ike's other albums because it was a soundtrack, but it still had that one very, very, very, very, very, very, very long song in "Do Your Thing." Coming in just under 20 minutes it is an ultimate funk workout(perfect for the road). One day I drove my kids insane playing this record. Another classic from the man in chains!!!!!!!

In format there is "Hybrid' which means there are two layers - SACD and CD. In notes you mention: "24-bit, 88,2 kHz, stereo only SACD." If this is SACD layer only version, then for sure not Hybrid. SACD is natively in DSD format so it is 1-bit, and has a sampling rate of 2.8224 MHz - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Stream_Digital

24-bit, 88,2 kHz is description of PCM format that is not available on any SACD.

I realise this is kind of a blasphemy to criticize an instant classic and absolutely cult musical piece like that, but to be perfectly honest, quite a few tracks, especially in the middle of the soundtrack, are pretty cheesy and blunt, they are fillers at best, and not really that interesting and pleasing.

Of course, no doubt, "Theme From Shaft" is an absolutely colossal and monumental composition, and mind-blowing, almost 20 min massive sexy jam "Do Your Thing" is just plain awesome. But not every track is that great on "Shaft". And that's why my rating is "okay", and not "good" or "awesome". I think people tend to follow a mainstream, generalised opinion way to literally; it's a default option to praise this album, but anyone would agree that some tracks here are boring, or maybe even rubbish.
