This an outstanding pressing of Stan Getz's favorite album of his. Sounds fantastic to my ears and can be found for a reasonable price these days too.

Stan Getz has always claimed that Focus was the favorite of all of his recordings. This time out, rather that featuring other musicians, Stan finds himself with arranger Eddie Sauter, where the album is described as being a suite originally commissioned by Getz from composer Sauter, and to my way of thinking, no one ever managed to arrange for Getz better than Sauter.

On a whole, this is an intoxicating bewitching album that’s shimmering and luminous, a classic of its era, a harmonic sophisticated endeavor flowing with rhythmic drive, supporting a wide emotional stance along with the technical magic necessary for orchestration. That said, the outing is grounded, yet entirely adventurous and certainly unlike anything Getz had done before, an immersive collaboration between jazz and classical music that is self supporting and never tiring. And if that’s not enough for you, there’s a partial Focus video that’s surfaced, said to be from the Edie Adams television show which ran on ABC, one of the thirteen episodes that aired between 1963 and ’64, featuring a bit of “Once Upon A Time” and “Pan.”

Many have suggested that Focus is the most important string work ever composed and recorded by a jazz artist, with Sauter’s score to this day defying categorization, where each of the movements presents and inspires a unique fairytale mood, reminding me of what Hans Christian Anderson might have come up with had he been a musician. All in all, Sauter conceived the production to be composed of no less than seven fairytales that stand on their own, yet at the same time have ability to drift both back and forward, inter mixing in a whimsical omnipresent manner with the others. In essence, Focus becomes more clear and understandable as it unfolds, the writing is simply not an example of jazz meshed with strings, nor, on the other hand is it a purely classical work washed with jazz soloing, meaning Focus is a true hybrid that references Walt Disney’s ‘Alice In Wonderland,’ along with images derived from Greek mythology … a truly dynamic undertaking that could have easily collapsed under its own weight, though managed to rise and fuse so many entirely disconnected spirited ideas.

At this juncture, it’s essential to understand that on one side of the coin we have the musical score, yet that score would be nothing without the soloist’s (Getz) imagination and interpretation, with Getz holding the piece together with recurrent motives and themes that appear and reappear, where the like-mindedness of these two greats is only realized though the musical expression and interplay of all these possibilities, where with the advent of those rhythmic orchestral strings ebbing at the heart of Getz’s jazz, something greater and more immense flowers into being.

Even while listening, it’s easy to miss the sheer scope and virtuosity held within this performance, as Getz employs nearly the entire range of his instrument, everything from the low B in bar 105 to the high F# in bar 113, complete with dazzlingly proficient runs, along with featuring extensive phrasings that are nothing short of eloquent, often double tonguing, and when drifting back to reality, in short, no one manages to play a whole note in any fashion with the artistry and musicianship quite like Stan Getz.

I know some give WaxTime a hard time but this pressing sound wonderful. As already mentioned, it plays dead quiet and with a nice full, rich sound. A very unique album combining jazz and classical that doesn't seem to have a rival. I would also love to obtain a mono version of this as well one day. But for stereo, I'm very happy with this version. Only complaint is that it doesn't retain the original grateful.

I don't have any complaints about the way this sounds. Little to no surface noise, good dynamics, very clear-sounding. Given that OG copies of Focus are so tough to find in the wild, I'm pretty happy with this edition. The digital download card is a nice inclusion.

I wore out my original copy between 1963 and 1966. As an aspiring saxophonist I listened to this recording for hours on end. Truly one of the few examples where a hybrid (jazz/Classical) effort actually worked and this case was near perfection. The compositions are wonderful and they allowed Getz to really stretch out, both tonally and rhythmically. They were not just something for him to riff over. They allowed him to "co-compose" with Sauter and come up with a very unique texture

Later on in my life I owned a recording studio in Menlo Park CA where just before his death Stan recorded Voyage. I had the privilege to spend a few days with him and when I asked him the not so original question, "what of your many recordings are you most proud of" he said "Focus". That statement confirmed my long held belief that Focus really was something special.

The story goes that Stan Getz personally guaranteed MGM would not lose money on this LP if they left it in the catalogue like a classical music album rather than deleting it within the year. It sold so consistently well that he was never called upon to stump up.

If I were to be banished from humanity, destined to live out my life on a deserted island but given the opportunity to select one compact disc to spend the rest of my days with... without a doubt that disc would be "FOCUS". The combined genius of Eddie Sauter and Stan Getz leaves every other recorded musical genre in second, nah scratch that, 3rd, 4th or 5th would be a more likely placement. After "FOCUS" there is no other recording (IMHO) that conveys as much sensitivity creativity or emotional integrity... hence the fatality of second place. Although its 50th anniversary is on the horizon, this recording sounds as fresh today as it did when this old man was enchanted by and seduced by the musicality of life.
