Julien Baker – Turn Out The Lights

This 24-bit version sounds fantastic. These songs pull at my heartstrings. The music is relatively simple, and it makes me feel emotionally exposed. Wow, that sounds wimpy. Not many albums have made me feel this way.

Well, this is not what I expected. It's less Hipster-ish and more Lilith Fair/NPR-ish. That's not necessarily a bad thing. But if you're going to travel down that well-trodden road, it would be nice to bring something fresh to it. Baker doesn't.

Stylistically, the artist Baker most reminds me of is Patty Griffin. But to make that comparison is to reveal Baker's several shortcomings. Where Griffin's best songs offer the mature insights of a woman who's seen her share of hard knocks in life, Baker's sound like the shallow wailing of a melodramatic teenager. As a vocalist, she lacks Griffin's lung power. And where Griffin's albums offer a mix of varying moods and tempos, the relentless saminess of Baker's songs becomes tiring over the course of a full album. Baker is not without talent, and has the potential to become a relevant artist eventually. But it will probably take her a few years of growth and better self-awareness to get there.

A fantastic pressing, clear and clean and the vocals really shine through.

This pressing sounds wonderful, really great. I own this one and a the 'Clear w/ Green (colour in colour)' and whilst that is a good pressing, this one blows it out the water for me. Those first two tracks, so powerful and this pressing really does them justice.

This is available again as an unnumbered repress to subscribers through the normal monthly "swap" process. It is not available as a single purchase. It is exactly the same except it has the normal Bandbox sticker instead of the one that has /1000.

does anyone know where it is numbered? I can’t seem to find it

Mine was from HMV, hype stickered as limited edition, transparent purple. It's definitely just the black version though.

My copy looks purple. It has the swirl effect, but it is not pink at all.

Can echo the other comments. Very decent pressing, and a great album.
