- The repress definitely sounds better than the original in my opinion, having listened to both copies.
- Edited 9 months agoAfter I found the first Demon Records reissue of Transmissions to actually sound better to me than the original pressing I own, I was quite curious about this one. I had my doubts already simply for the fact that it's been compressed from a 3x12" to 2xLP, but decided to give it a shot anyway. I own both so I was able to compare them directly. Long story short...it simply does not stack up to the original pressing. Read on for the details.
Comparing the sound using identical turntables/cartridges and beatmatching/crossfading back and forth, the sound on this reissue is really lacking power and comes across very thin in comparison. I should also mention I only compared the tracks that have 2 per side on both, to be more fair; that is Side C/D here and E/F on the original. For this reissue I had to crank my gain to the maximum on my mixer but it still just doesn't get all the way there. In contrast the original pressing blows it away at only 3/4 gain. It's not that this sounds bad, but like many remasters today, it's probably too compressed.
Artwork-wise, the original pressing was also done much better with a gatefold and a unique magnetic closing mechanism. The front foil artwork is retained here, which is nice, but it's smaller than original (9.25" diameter circle vs. 11" circle); however the back seems to be about the same. The black matte finish is also a slightly lighter black here than the original. We are given the same 8 inner gatefold artwork prints here, but they are printed on matte card inner sleeves and a bit smaller. This matte printing unfortunately washes out the vibrant colors which are in the original artwork. The original gatefold also has further foil work in the center of each side not present here.
Overall, not a terrible reissue by any means, but I would advise anyone who really likes this album to seek out an original pressing as it's totally worth the extra. If you can get this one on sale like I did (cost was $30 USD with shipping), this might be worth it as an alternative, but any higher - the retail asking price is $49 - is not even close to being worth it. Decent effort, but unfortunately misses the mark. - I don't know why people are spending 60+ euros from sellers here on discogs when it is available for far less on Juno & Amazon...
As for the record itself, which I did get (see my original comment below) -
Not as premium as the original - which I don't have but saw how it looks - the original as a magnetic opening with a gatefold.
This is a regular outer sleeve (not gatefold) with two printed inner sleeves mimicking the original gatefold.
The vinyls sounds wonderful, clean and a blast. Worth it even if it is a bit downgraded from the original release. - Very pleased with the sound in this repress. Super clean, low noise, great stereo separation. Packaging leaves a bit to be desired but honestly I don't care because I've been after this album since I started collecting 15+ years ago. Worth your money for the sound alone.

I am a bit annoyed at myself that I didn't pick up this album on release in 1997. As far as I am concerned now, it is one of the outstanding releases of the late 90's. Not being very familiar with Juno Reactor at that time, when I saw the album in the shops then I thought it was gabber.
When will I learn to never judge a book by its cover. - How does it sound, and how many copies were made? I can barely find it anywhere online a day after it was "released"

This edition is a Digipack or jewellcase? Thanks a lot
