The vocals are very low in the mix on this pressing. I would avoid it.referencing New York Dolls (LP, Album, Reissue) 6336 280
I own this pressing, bought it sealed. Sounds great, no complaints. Early 80's....?- How is this a "test press" when it has a promo stamp at the top of the label? This is more likely an advance promo, no? I'm not sure a true test press would come complete with a printed sleeve and inner either. Anyone else have an opinion/expert guidance on this?
- Got this pressing with the printed inner sleeve and the “1973 Phonogram inc.” over the “Dolls” letters on the record labels
Any clue about the year of production of this edition? - Edited 8 months agoMy 2008 pressing seems to sound pretty good but I have nothing to compare it to. What I don't know won't hurt me because this record ROCKS!
- Edited 8 months agoSounds quite deep and wide and is actually flat and not noisy even though it is Rainbo pressing. A little distortion on low tones. But I have no other version to compare and verify if this is the quality of original recordin (I assume it might) Plus, I Ilike the fact there is no ugly barcode on the back of the cover.
- Does anyone have any information on the SRM-1-675 pressing that has Mercury highlighted in red instead of the original New York Dolls in lipstick?
- Did a back-to-back with an original and this one, would have been purchased in 81 or so... It's a weak boxy noisy pressing compared to the earlier '70s pressings. In general seems like poor quality vinyl and maybe worn plates? It's obviously the same mastering, just in lesser quality all around.
- This is the version to have soundwise.. I don't know when they remastered this, sometime I guess in the early 2000s, they certainly increased the clarity of the vocals and the instrumental separation... Which would be great if this was the Alan Parson's Project or something... Everything holds together in one glorious squall on these early pressings... The later remastering probably sounds "better" but at the expense of all the energy of the original recording... The later skyscraper labels sound a little on the thin side, but these original label early pressings are the way to go and they're not that expensive... Just did a sound-wise shootout between first pressing, skyscraper pressing, and the most recent pink vinyl reissue... The pink vinyls got the remastered version and I don't know how, even though it sounds technically better, it's lost all the energy of the original version. Get an original and just turn it the hell up. David Jo Hansen's vocals aren't exactly improved when you can hear him with more clarity, and the instrumental backing is a lot more powerful when it's all jammed together, like on the original pressing. This was never meant to be some sort of audiophile masterpiece, the original pressing just sort of blasts right out of the stereo whereas the later remaster is kind of ho-hum, and points out the band's weaknesses, instead of playing to their strengths. Snag a decent original, grab the pink one, play them back-to-back and you tell me what you think. Skip the skyscraper label ones, mostly flat and boxy sounding, and the late '70s early '80s vinyl they were using is often dull and noisy.
