The Boomtown Rats – I Don't Like Mondays

One of the most outstanding A sides of all time. Many regard it as one of the best songs ever recorded. It truly is a masterpiece and is outstanding musically and lyrically.
Bob Geldof's emotional and poiquant performance is highly charged and you clearly hear his exasperation and frustration for a real life situation that should never have happened.
This is pop, no doubt about it, but it's also melodic genius, that raised the bar, and infused a new level of intelligence and intensity into what was considered by many to be a light weight from of music.
This tune is the sound of Pop evolving and growing up. Others did this in the past, in particular Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, but the Rats brought this realistic, and topical level of sophistication, directly into our pop charts here in the UK.
Remarkably, despite the tragic events that Bob brought to our attention, it's really accessible, and works amazingly as a brilliant sing-along.
