I realize this is a nearly 50 year old recording, but I feel it needs to be pointed out that the very poor production here works as a real detriment...Zeit, just one year later, sounds infinitely (no pun intended) better by comparison. There are a lot of great ideas heard here (and understand that it still has its pleasures), but the production is so unbearably thin that it just robs it of most of its power. Consequently, it isn't very much fun to actually listen to....Start with Zeit and go from there!

With my sealed copy the picture disc was ok but the main album record was so scuffed up it's unlistenable. Anyone else seeing anything like this?

Of Alpha, Atem, Meditation and Zeit this is my least favourite of the early period TD releases. There seems to be a lack of focus and 'gelling' in the sessions that makes the flute parts at odds with the organ (and so on). Mood and tempo are on the light and breezy side, my preference is for the brooding, suprising and more satisfying 'Zeit-like' material. Musical elements employed just don't seem wholly compatible to my ears, and this type of music is about generating an overarching feeling in the listener. Good to have as a touchstone to their roots but probably best not to start here if you are unfamiliar with their work.

During the opening moments of opening piece Sunrise in the Third System, it would be easy to imagine that Alpha Centauri is going to follow a similar pattern to Tangerine Dream's debut album, Electronic Meditation. However, instead of building to a sonic freakout, with psychedelic fuzz guitar and pummeling drums, the piece grows in a slow, stately manner, and is joined by a high-pitched, pulsating synth. It is at this point where Tangerine Dream leave rock music behind, and head off into spacey, electronic head music. Fly and Collision of Comas Sola opens in a very similar vein, before being propelled into an onslaught of percussion.

The title track, which makes up the second half of the record, is the most notable piece here. Utilising the same set of instruments as the rest of the record, the band manage to create a piece which is much further removed from traditional music than anything they had before. Alpha Centauri is a tapestry of various textures and tones, with organ drones keeping the piece together; at times the track is chokingly claustrophobic, at others light and dreamy. The most striking sound, as on the other two tracks, is the EMS VCS3, the band's first foray into experimenting with synthesisers. Between its bursts of screaming, atonal noise, there are bubbling pulsations that draw to mind the sound the group became most famous for later in the '70s.

If not quite as distinctive as the albums that came immediately before and after it, Alpha Centauri is nevertheless a strong work of '70s kosmiche music and a fascinating chapter in the ongoing story of Tangerine Dream. This issue comes complete with both sides of 1971's Ultima Thule single, the a-side of which is possibly the biggest anomaly in the TD catalogue (a somewhat conventional sounding progressive rock instrumental) and a live recording from the same year, which make it a particularly worthwhile purchase.

This one became instantly one of my favorite "cosmic" records. Read the track titles and you know what you can expect: Intergalactic music for tripping away, even when you are not taking drugs.
The music is not really complicated, but the atmosphere it creates is just incredible.
"Sunrise In The Sird System" begins very slowly and maintains a steady tension with more and more strings and pulsating synth sounds. The only negative point about this track is, that it is too short.
According to the title "Fly And Collision Of Coma Sola" is divided in several parts. There's an ambient part at the beginning (the flight?) that is followed by a synthesizer transition and then the last part, containing of really moving drums (the collison?).
"Alpha Cebtauri" is even more incredible like the two other tracks, a beautiful, very long ambient track with some german voices as a climax, speaking about god, the cosmos and mankind.
This edition of the record also contains "Ultima Thule pt.1" as a bonus track. This song doesn't really fit to the other tracks, but anyway, it's a great piece of music too, and not such easy to get as other Tangerine Dream material.
It's not hard to find this record, so if you are a fan of spacey music, get it or you miss something!
