Gershon Kingsley – Music To Moog By

Does anyone have a version of this where the B runout is "AFSD 6226 B MII"? I see that runout corresponds with the Israeli pressing, but that has a different cover and label color entirely. My version has the "AFSD 6226 B MII" runout with a cover that looks identical to this one and has a blue Audio Fidelity label.

I love the fact that the cover shot features an awful lot of nipples! ;-)

This a classic album from the early electronic music period. The LP "Music To Moog By" by Gershon Kingsley from 1969, included versions of popular songs and original compositions, performed on the Moog synthesizer. The track "Hey, Hey" is enjoyable, the arrangement of "Scarborough Fair" sounds very good on a synthesizer and is a notable tune of the album and another track was the lively and cheerful adaptation of "Für Elise" (composed by Beethoven) with an "Electronic music" climax. "Sheila" and "Sunset Sound" are soft melodies.

The original version of "Pop Corn" is melodic and was an essential electronic music classic. The instrumentals "Twinkle, Twinkle" and "Trumansburg Whistle" are cheerful. The versions of "Nowhere Man" and "Paperback Writer" are also fantastic.

This album was revolutionary for Electronic Music and Kingsley was a pioneer of the genre.

Fun Fact: The flowers on the front cover art are made from photos of nipples.

A solid example of early commercial electronic music. This release originally hit the stands in 1969, only a year since Walter Carlos' 'Hooked On Bach' and also about the time the market was being flooded with like-minded moog cheese. Kingsley's first project without former partner JJ Perrey still shines as a truly groundbreaking piece of work. There's a nice and warm pre-Tangerine Dream feel to these tracks (all covers), particularly evident on his version of 'Popcorn', which sounds better than Hot Butter's 1972 version. Other tracks, such as his cover of 'Scarborough Fair' and 'For Alisse Beethoven' sound way ahead of their time. The lead 'Hey Hey' track is very nice, as well as the most familliar to most listeners. Even the less-impressive 'Twinkle Twinkle' can still grow likeable with repeated listening. Reccomended!
