Ten words required for a commented post. Here'e 10 then: 'DEEP DEEP DEEP DEEP DEEP DEEP DEEP DEEP DEEP DEEP' (There's 10 words.) Now, a real comment. PAPER RECORDINGS. Is so under-rated. From 10 fathoms down in a Manchester basement how a label can offer such a NY sound is beyond I. Let alone the artwork on the reverse of the sleeves which is simply off the scale. Put simply PURE QUALITY. Pleased I spent hundreds/£££'s searching them out. PAPER RECORDINGS ... referencing I Will Lead (12", 45 RPM) paperecordings 36
Some copies have a small sticker on the front cover saying "due to extreme slackness by paperecordings designer, paul cleary this release has the labels on the round way wrong".referencing I Will Lead (12", 45 RPM) paperecordings 36
The Hollway & Eastwick Mix is an interesting and milestone piece of club music as it announces and predates the whole trend of what was to be called 'minimal' and would dominate the worldwide club scene of the 10 years to follow.
What you have here is a quite stripped-down and sinister drugged down house-music for the deeper, darker and later hours of the night, taking its roots in Murk or Mood II Swing's most hypnotic and smokey moments, but reduced and stripped down way further in an almost 'experi-mental' approach (especially for the times).
Not much happens on here then (super deep bassline, sexual techy tension, beyond-the-grave, devilishly seducing vocal intrusion), but like every genre-defining moment, it is a quite mesmerizing, brain-seizing and somehow warming 'not much'.
For the better and the worse, this tune was pivotal in setting a tone that is still copied and inspiring today's house productions over 10 years after, from big room druggy hazes to more intimate, anxious-yet-deep underground productions.
