Greatest hits album and DVD, initially released on November 17, 2003 worldwide and on November 18, 2003 in the United States. The US version, International version and DVDs have slightly different track listings. The release was officially marketed as album and should be tagged as such as well as compilation.
There were four different covers: a shot from the “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” music video (1979), a shot from a “Billie Jean” live performance (Dangerous World Tour 1992/93), a shot from the “Bad” music video (1987), and a shot from the “Black or White” music video (1991). These represent, respectively, the Off The Wall era, the Thriller era, the Bad era, and the Dangerous era.
The releases themselves identify those different covers as:
CIRCA 1979 “OFF THE WALL” PERIOD
CIRCA 1984 “THRILLER” PERIOD
CIRCA 1988 “BAD” PERIOD
CIRCA 1995 “HIStory” PERIOD
Accordingly, the releases are identified in the format Free Text Field as Off The Wall-Period Cover, Thriller-Period Cover, Bad-Period Cover, or HIStory-Period Cover. (discussion).
An exclusive slipcase was also available from Sony for purchasers of all 4 covers to store them in. This had a catalogue number of XPCD 2893.

My copy is a bit odd... Any help?
The first record is a transparent red and sounds / looks pretty good. The second one is opaque, has lots of little bumps and sounds more "compressed" in comparison to the first one.
Does anyone else have the same issue? Is there a transparent variant for both?
It has every song that I love. It is an above perfect album.
The track list does not match the track list on the artwork. The artwork is correct.

It's curious! Korea and Japan press has another Thriller Cover, too. 
Edited 12 years agoThere is no denying Michael Jackson’s cultural significance (Music, Dance, Video, Fashion?). I enjoyed listening to this collection even though it does cover the latter part of his career, most of which I consider not to be his finest.
House music has always been a tough sell for me so the remixes of You Are Not Alone, Blood On The Dancefloor and Black Or White (with embarrassing ‘Rap Kick’) I found pretty unimaginative. However Earth Song was much improved by being Housed up.
The brilliance of MJ is most evident not on the singles but on MJ Megamix and Michael Jackson Anthology Mix because they cram in the best briefly. Well they should do, shouldn’t they.
Whilst listening to this collection I was reminded of my most memorable MJ performance, which was back in 1996 when he performed Earth Song at the British Phonographic Industry's annual pop music awards The Brits. Jarvis Cocker from Pulp ‘stormed’ the stage and made what I thought was a very amusing protest. I ended up going out and buying Pulp - This Is Hardcore.
Twelves confirmed that I am happy for MJ to be one of those Artists that I don’t mind listening to on the radio at work, rather than one of those Artists I listen to as part of my record collection.
