'Tremendous improvement on John Surman's first record - not just cos the Calypso has been dropped but because generally speaking John's organized his group much better. Galata starts off in an undisguised Coltrane fashion- and moves off into three distinct sections- the most pleasing being the emergence of John Taylor from a few repeated riffs of 'In a Persian Market'. Caractacus is a II nd class version of Vigil from Tranes Kulu Se Mama - whilst Premonition has the excellent Mr Taylor and Mr Oxley sounding rather like Mile's group men, Williams and Hancock- not to mention Tyner- Event is too long and Clouds is really too short for such a beautiful wistful tune. Worth a good listen. " Review by - Miles Kington.
