Sinatra's 10th album with Capitol, and 14th overall, originally recorded on October 1, 3 and 8, 1957, at Capitol Studio A in Hollywood, California.
This was Sinatra's first collaboration with arranger/conductor Billy May, and was designed as a musical trip around the world. Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen wrote the title track at Sinatra's request.
Recorded in both mono and stereo as separate simultaneous recordings with different balances and tonal characteristics. Originally released in mono only on January 6, 1958, the album spent five weeks at #1 on the Billboard album charts. Reissued in stereo in December 1961. Remastered for expanded reissue in 1987.
Some versions replace "On The Road To Mandalay" with "It Happened in Monterey" (due to copyright issues in Europe). Others replace "On The Road To Mandalay" with "French Foreign Legion" with some listing the latter on the sleeve but featuring "It Happened in Monterey" on the labels.

- This is the stereo version to own in my humble opinion. I’ll be doing a YouTube video touting this pressing . The stereo mics in 1957 during the recording sessions supposedly didn’t get the same quality as the mono. I do agree NOTHING beats an Ex or better 1958 LA MONO pressing (gray label!!!) but this stereo 61 UK is OUTSTANDING
- My pressing has the vertical “Long Playing High-Fidelity” label mentioned here. But it is an Indianapolis pressing shown by the stamped “I” in the deadwax. No anvil so not Scranton.
- Have a pressing I cannot identify. It is cat. no. SM 500920 but it is on a "Capitol" label that is YELLOW. Sleeve has Capitol logo in upper left hand corner (not lower right corner) and the label has the STEREO above SM 500920 (SM 1-500920) to the right of the center hole. First three song titles are above the hole and three below the hole on side 1. The manufacturer and license verbiage is in an arc above the center in fine red print while "Capitol" is in bold red print centered at the bottom of the label. Any help is appreciated.
- Many non-US pressings of this LP, particularly those in countries with ties to the U.K., deleted "On the Road to Mandalay" found on U.S. and Canadian pressings, replacing it with "It Happened in Monterey" due to whining from Rudyard Kipling's estate (Kipling wrote the lyrics).
- Two separate releases exist with this same catalogue number. One is mono, the other is stereo. I know because I have both. From the outside sleeve, they are undistinguishable!

Have an early Dutch mono pressing of this record. It also has a grey Capitol lable, but in the edge it says: Mfd. by N.V Bovema in Holland. Comes in a UK sleeve with LCT 6154 on the back.
This is an insanely high quality remaster for the price. Scoop it up if you see it.
The quality is perfect ! Zero background noise, and the loudness is just right- Edited one year agoGreat classic vinyl for any collection. Can’t go wrong with this world wide assortment of travel songs. One of the oldest concept albums and it sure sounds sweet on this pressing.

Doesn't seem to be any reviews so Ill comment on it... Bought this for 20 dollars new, for 20 dollars you get the jacket and record. No bells, whistles, anything of standout quality. No complaints with the record itself. Sounds fine for the 1950s
