The first Broadway Project album was cinematic and psychedelic, and their second album THE VESSEL continues down the same path, from the low thrum of “Beauty” to the indie-rock-by-way-of-the-Orient “I Believe in Superman.” Though you can’t deny the anguish on tracks like “Coming Back” and “For the One,” Richard Palmer’s vocals aren’t quite polished enough to exploit the emotion to its fullest extent. Instead, they can come off as whiny. Compare that to the gospel chorus on “Darkling”; the weight and heft of the vocals there add to the the drum rolls, the instrumental mélange, the dense sonics. But on occasion, Palmer fits the track to a tee: “Unborn” goes into a quiet, mourning mode. An intriguing and complicated album, if not entirely successful.
