Notes

A single LP version titled Sandinista Now! featuring 12 of the 36 tracks was released in the US to promote the album.

Sandinista! is the fourth studio album by the English band the Clash. It was released on 12 December 1980 as a triple album containing 36 tracks, with 6 songs on each side. Anticipating the "world music" trend of the 1980s, it features funk, reggae, jazz, gospel, rockabilly, folk, dub, rhythm and blues, calypso, disco, and rap. For the first time, the band's traditional songwriting credits of Strummer and Jones were replaced by a generic credit to the Clash, and the band agreed to a decrease in album royalties in order to release the 3-LP at a low price.

The title refers to the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, and its catalogue number, 'FSLN1', refers to the abbreviation of the party's Spanish name, Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional.

Sandinista! was voted best album of the year in the Pazz & Jop critics poll in The Village Voice, and was ranked number 404 on the Rolling Stone list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" in 2003. Slant Magazine listed the album at number 85 on its "Best Albums of the 1980s" list in 2012.

Another very low output edition, that just fails to deliver.

As good as London Calling, period. This pressing is a dream, and Tim Young created the definite masters for the entire Clash discography, anyone disagree?
The variety of styles might be disturbing to many, I always loved it. The Reggae tunes are superb, as is the whole album. It's like watching a movie. A great one!!
        One of my favourite albums.

This record is truly beyond category. The amount of craft and detail seems phenomenal to me. A good record will stretch you beyond your normal expectations. That’s exactly what this record does.

My copies poster is different. It has the same printing on it, but instead of folding out to a 6 panel, one sided poster, it folds out to a 3 panel poster, with half the panels printed on one side, and half printed on the other side

Instead of Sandinista being a triple album, they should have made it a 12” single with the Magnificat Seven, and purified the rest of the master tapes in an oily fire.

My entry point to The Clash was through friends in 1982, so I heard all of their original albums and singles up to Combat Rock in a tumbling back and forth manor and London Calling was the focal point and I literally loved the music and found it quite diverse through the albums, with a straight punk sound at the start and more sophisticated in the end, Combat Rock.
Sandinista however, was so massive with its 3 full LPs (London Calling is about 15 mins/side) that it drew my interest and that was the first record that I wanted for myself, albeit that London Calling was filled with exuberant hits, but Sandinista struck me as more of an adventure.
I for one loved the re-takes/re-dubs of tracks like Junco Partner, and did not see that as a sign of watering the album out, quite the opposite, it enriched it IMO. I rarely play the album from 1 to 6 in a straight manner, but rather mix the sides as I feel like. If I had to pick my favourite sides it would be 2 and 6, and even if here are some tracks on 3 to 5 that I don't straight out love, I still find this filled package ultimately rewarding and I keep coming back to this as well as Combat Rock, which I value even higher.
..and, just a marginal observation: I live in Sweden and got this for X-mas in 1982, I had pointed out the Hard Rock record shop where they had this new for a very low standard price, as it was intended to be. Recently was gifted another copy, also bought in Sweden. Was it pressed in 1982 with export in mind?

Apparently the looped sample at the start of Version City is from a Mattel Optigan, an organ sold in the 70s that played optical discs, with the disc in particular called Singing Rhythm.

When the 'DJ' at the beginning of Version City starts singing ("I've always wanted to cross the ocean" etc.), is it meant to be a parody of Scott Walker?

This is a killer sounding punk rock album by the Clash. The sound is really good, warm. Well balanced and naturaly crisp.

Its awesome. Thick Vinyl. Heard a lot of music influenced by the varied sounds of this one in retrospect.
Paid $24.75 new from an Ebay seller in Jan. 22.
