Just got my copy. I guess I was lucky because mine sounds great. Quiet vinyl too which is a must for this album. I also have the original UK version which is a bit noisy, but the audio is great too. I like this 50th better just for the quiet vinyl.
UPDATE: Been listening to this a few days and it is just fantastic. Miles Showell is my favorite Lacquer cutter guy. All the pressings that I have of his is just amazing.

Nice sounding pressing in spite of the surface noise on my copy. Very hefty as well.

There are so man TB issues now it's almost impossible to keep track! The CDV2001 CD in power blue from 1983 or 84 which was issued until late 90s with red type on clear disc. This sounds pretty natural, not loud, a little muddy but it can be cranked up. High frequencies are tasty and tickle the ears. You can hear limitations of the master tape which have been cleaned in subsequent versions.
It's pleasant on the ears I must add. The Tubular Bells at the end of side one exploded beautifully just like they should.
Piltdown Man is tight and focused. The drums not as fat as newer reissues. I like this version as it's the one I bought in 1990 when I got into Mike Oldfield.

Then there's the 25th anniversary in 1998 remaster in hardback with gold disc. This mix definitely improves the original mid 80s CDV2001 issues as the bass is a bit tighter. It has been cleaned up a bit no less. It's not a bad upgrade at all. But the original CD will be fine for most people that do not like modern versions.
This was again issued in 2000 with HDCD encoding. The running times are incorrect on the 2000 artwork but identical to the 1998.
                  Pt-1 is actually 25:36 and Pt-2 is 23:21.
The 2001 SACD version has this 1998 mix on layer one and the other layer is the 1976 boxed mix which has the longer Sailor's Hornpipe at the end. Another thing about the 1976 Boxed mix is the Nasal Chorus is repeated 3 times not 2 like the original.

The 2009 remix here has the Nasal Chorus repeated 3 times not 2 like the original!!! I find the discs in this 2009 to be compressed. Dynamics do not shine like the 1998 unfortunately. It seems to lack depth and while it sounds punchy it's a bit lifeless. The Tubular Bells at the end of side one sound like whine chimes! Pretty thin!

The 50th Anniversary has again the original mix and the high frequencies pop out nicely. It's louder than previous versions with compression and bass is fatter. It's a detailed mix all the same and pretty engaging. Nasal Chorus repeated 2 times just like the original. The Tubular Bells here are bigger and more realistic. There was a bit of trouble with these on the master I've read.
Piltdown Man is nice and fat and the drums less muddy than on other versions.
I like this mix with big headphones. So take your pick! There could be a thesis on TB now, well two actually, one on the music and the other on the multiple editions over the last 50 plus years!

The inner artwork is terrible in the HDCD series. The disc labels poor also. It was a poor facelift for Mikes great virgin catalog.
This 2000 edition is the 1998 remaster again with HDCD encoding. The running times are incorrect on the sleeve as usual with Pt-1 clocking in at 25:00 which is wrong. Pt-2 is also incorrect. Pt-1 is actually 25:36 and Pt-2 is 23:21. The SACD version has this mix on layer one and the other layer is the 1976 boxed mix which has the longer Sailor's Hornpipe at the end. I just got a copy of Tubular Bells L.p. record, I have a few different copies and variations (labels, Quadraphonic, etc.) That copy I got this week has the Red and Blue Virgin Twins label. Cat No V2001 Australia. My copy has the Gold Record Award triangle on the bottom left of the cover.
Would this be the original first pressing of Tubular Bells in Australia, or is the B/W Twins Virgin label the first?
Does anyone no the ded wax Matrix Number for the first pressing in Australia ? Many Thanks
