Album Revolution #2:
No longer confined in a group ("The Miracles"), "Smokey Robinson" got his solo career on a great start with his debut album, "Smokey"....Now he was really ready to flex his skills on "Pure Smokey"....
Once again, now ready to talk about anything, "It's Her Turn To Live", is talking about a Lady getting her life together...
"The Love Between Me And My Kids" and "Asleep On My Love" are pretty much self explanatory songs, with EXTREME SOUL POWER!!!!!
The 1st Crown Jewel, "I Am I Am", is a Straight Up, "You Better Understand What I'm Saying Or The Heck With You" joint (It's Very Upfront!!!!!)!!!!!! I LOVE the beginning though....My Middle Daughter used to think it was "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" (LOL!!!!)....
"Just Passing Through" (the 2nd Crown Jewel), is a crazy love life story that's not set in stone...
The 3rd Crown Jewel in "Virgin Man", was a VERY, VERY, VERY brave joint at the time (Trust, that is not always an easy subject for a Dude to talk about)....
The 4th Crown Jewel, "She's Only A Baby Herself", talks about the MASSIVE problem of teen pregnancy...
"Fulfill Your Need" is a nice little joint, but not on the level of the other songs....
The final song and 5th Crown Jewel, "A Tattoo", is a very very rare instrumental jam, something I wished that "Smokey" have revisited (I think he would have pulled it off!!!!)...
As with the first album, "Willie Hutch" helped "Smokey" Produce another great album here....Also looking at the info above, I see that future "L.T.D." members, "Henry Davis" (Bass) and the one and only "Jeffrey Osborne" (Drums), helped out here as well...
Something I should have mentioned, even with my "Smokey & The Miracles" reviews, is the constant presence of Guitarist Extraordinaire "Marvin Tarplin"....It seemed like he was "Smokey's" right hand man, and he was even a member of "The Miracles" at one time...
After this album, it seemed like people were very comfortable about "Smokey" being a solo artist (and they should have)....Now, get ready, because, "Smokey" was about to release his best album ever!!!!!!!!!! referencing Puro Smokey (LP, Album) S-32.579
