Bad cut on side A. A lot of surface noise, so bad it's even visible on the leadout and lock groove. Side B is much better.

What a disappointing album this is, to my ears it's just watered out Goldfrapp. Why is La Roux hyped so much, while real quality like Empire State Human must live in the shadows?

Great to see that La Roux is getting major US recognition! Hopefully this isn't the end of her in America like most British/European/Australian artists after their one hit song.

The living (bullet)proof there are better things out there to listen to than a hundred Lady Gagas ever will record. At this moment, La Roux are not that far from such trashy cliches either, still whether by their design or default (not to forget Elly Jackson's melancholic voice), are something to hear out for in the future. Unless they blow it and remain a one-album sensation like many others.

Despite enormous success, this is a far cry from synth-pop many are pulling comparisons by - however, it is not a stereotype of sorts either; it tries to sound 'here, now and unique' and that's an accomplishment holding up these songs with a certain appeal.

The only downer in La Roux's debut catalogue is, it flirts too much with modern r'n'b-ish sort of dispersed rhythm and melodies, where for the better (read: worse), those horrifyingly affecting computerized 'Beyonce' kind of vocals would fit in more.

Jackson's vocals partially sound weak and partially they blow with fragile strength; depending on her future singing excursions, Elly might improve if she avoids too much of that fluid high-pitch, by which she obviously informs her singing trademark.

'Fascination' and 'Quicksand' standout as my personal favourites from the album, although 'Fascination' is much much much better in its demo version (available for download via La Roux official web) - on the album, the track is sadly rid of the groove and sounds like something is missing in the final mix.

Generally it's a welcome debut, but it takes sometime to accept it. And let's hope, La Roux aren't just hype and slaves to fashion.
