Edited 17 days agoWith it's prominent funk break-beats, hip hop turntablism, rock guitars and quirky vocal samples, "The Number Song" was like a less-commercial, US take on British big beat.
Shadow juxtaposed '80s heavy metal (Metallica's "Orion" bassline) with '60s funk (the lively break from Third Guitar's "Baby Don't Cry"), and peppered it with funky break-downs, dexterous scratching, and number-themed hip hop and funk vocals (e.g., Pigmeat Markham's "Who got the number?" "Guess what?" "What?" "I got the number!").
The bridge was constructed from two back-to-back breaks: Pearly Queen's "Quit Jive' In" and Tony Alvon & The Bel-Airs' "Sexy Coffee Pot", with the Fantastic Five imploring: "Won't you please let me... rock your mind?”, from "Flashdance". The outro drums are from He 6's superb drum solo from their cover of "Get Ready".
The unusually frenetic drums were a break from the trip hop norm of "Endtroducing.....", but arguably over-crowd the track, obscuring the melody. Cut Chemist would rectify this with his remix, which replaced the drums with something a bit more straightforward. (8)- I'm curious where others have found the Midnight in A Perfect World (Warrior Mix) that floats around online. Any one have a clue? I've only seen it in "DJ Shadow: The Ultimate Collection."
- Midnight in a perfect world is an excellent cut, love it - its so relaxing to me. Love the vocals he has used and the electric piano. Something you can really chill out to post club, around 4am....
