Long time KJ fan since my simultaneous discovery in 1984 of S/T (Malicious Damage) 1980 and “Night Time” 1984.
For years my original experience of KJ’s self titled debut was backwards since a friend had “rented” the vinyl and we both recorded it on tape inverting sides A & B so it always began with “The Wait” and ended with “Bloodsport”. Since I was a fan of “Night Time” I would have expected myself not to appreciate this record but as it turned out, it always was one of my all time favorites. All tracks were unique and catchy, and resonated within the consciousness long after listen. To this day it is still often referenced to by the band and Gatherers alike, as both a starting point after their dubbish-origins, and example of studio-based work after numerous live performances. Plus it also showcased the band in it formative period as both edgy and relentless while not always being as “tight” as they’d become with more experience.

As far as debuts go, it rarely gets as good as this; KJ managed to lay down tracks which had both a direct assault and in-your-face attack as well as a sensibility and hint of sub-layered subtlety carefully inserted in their sound. It is by far still one of my favorite records from the band, with most of the songs/pieces standing almost as icons, strong enough to stand alone individually but wrecking utter havoc in their collective format. It may not have the sluggish urgency of “Revelations” nor the fun & games (pun intentional) of “Fire Dances”, or even the heavy duty post-metal riffage of their post millennium works, but it is without a doubt a very strong effort which, surprisingly, doesn`t end up sounding too kitsch vintage retro even if it was released about 34 years ago!

A remarkably powerful debut from a unique and groundbreaking band. Jaz Coleman was later quoted to have a few regrets regarding the album's production which he felt may have suppressed the raw power of the band at that time, whilst many fans feel that the production actually adds a new experimental dimension to that live sound. An interesting but litle known fact regarding Mike C's stunning gatefold sleeve artwork is that his awesome black & white collages are based upon legendary war photographer Don McCullin's early 1970's photographs of conflict between youths and state forces in Northern Ireland. (See McCullin's 2001 career retrospective for the original photographs)

The US version of Killing Joke's debut LP is notable for two variations from the UK release. Firstly, the US release adds 'Change' which was originally the b-side to the 'Requiem' single. Secondly, the UK release has a gatefold sleeve rather than the standard sleeve found on the US release.
