Half a decade past between Back In Business and its preceder. And while Business may have been “As Usual” for the money making duo when the 90’s were fresh, trust that in -97 the entire scene and rules were vastly different. A certain clan from Staten Island shredded the rule book with their liquid swords. Add to that hip-hop was still in chock after the senseless murders of Pac and Big.
Given the harsh new prerequisites, plus of course sky high expectations, EPMD seems surprisingly unbothered by the commotion and perhaps that was the key? Back In Business is undoubtedly dope and a welcome return to form after their recent solo ventures. E Double especially oozes swag, the type of slick confidence only a seasoned vet could embody. I covet his cool. The album is (relatively) short but focused with plenty of highlights. Top 3 for me are “Da Joint”, “K.I.M.” and “Last Man Standing”.
