Funny, I've had this album on cd since it initially came out- played it many many times, but it seems I only just really listened to it or heard it. Normally I dont pay much attention to the lyrics of a song, but driving along with the fidelity afforded by modern technology they really stood out and I got it. wow- quite the understatement.

This album was well mastered and sounds great !! not my fav k.j. lp but its still not bad and definitely worth owning, again the sound quality on this is above average!!!!!

After reading some scathing reviews about this one, I have to say it is far better than reputation would suggest. Granted, more synth than guitar but still retains the token kind of menacing sound that KJ are known for.

To me this seems to be a logical path in sound given the time of release and against their earlier releases. If you are put off by the negativity, please don't be.

I bought this, along with the spoken word recording which Jaz and Geordie made, along with the percussionist from Outside The Gate, both on CD, and found this recording to be kind of a pretty logical step after Brighter Than A Thousand Suns.
What's interesting is how apparently the band was very unhappy with the original sound on BTATS, yet OTG has far more production than it's predecessor.
As a whole, I like this recording a lot.
If one really pays attention to the lyrics, Jaz is really bringing to light some pretty serious topics.
Yes, it has a more produced commercial sound to it, like most of the other 80s bands - but there is something which still sets this aside from those other bands.
There is a lot of variety on this recording, especially the second half.
On the CD, there are a couple of bonus tracks, essentially remixes which are definately quite good.
While this may be viewed as a Jaz Coleman solo album, I still view it as a Killing Joke album, because initially it did feature the whole band, but then for reasons unknown Big Paul got sacked, and Raven asked his name to be removed from the credits.
I did see Killing Joke live in NYC, as the old Ritz that was downtown, and I seem to think that neither Big Paul, Raven, or Martin Atkins were in that band at that time, I seem to recall a different bassist and drummer were used for this one tour, which was right before the Money Is Not Our God tour.
I personally think this is a good recording to have, as it shows Jaz and Georgie in a different light, as one commenter mentioned, a light with more magic....

I for one do miss the opportunity to have "Stay One Jump Ahead (Extended Mix)" on vinyl as that was a nice addition as a bonus track on the original CD edition.
Also a bit strange, and a sonic under-achievement, is the addition of The Calling (formerly B1) to the A side, leaving the A side with less dynamics. It was just fine as it was.
Apart from these objections it's still a nice augmented edition that adds to the original album with a complete vinyl "on the side", and nice colours to go with the experience!
As I've stated in another review of this album, "Outside the Gate is simply Jaz and Geordie as magicians rather than musicians."
I still love this album and Killing Joke as a whole (even if their multiple re-releases are extending my collection without necessarily adding any missing tracks - I guess you can blame me for following that folly).

Beautiful album, people write nonsense about this album that it is bad commercial. That's why he says so because he does not know music.

I like all Killing Joke albums and this is in my top 5. It isn't really like the rest no, but that's why i like it. And i heard it after most of the others too so i was pleasantly surprised. Title track is bloody amazing. Lovely tunes. Lovely songs and very lovely singing from Jaz the growler. Also just bought EVERY reissue picture disc for Xmas. orse!

Long time KJ fan since my simultaneous discovery in 1984 of S/T (Malicious Damage) 1980 and “Night Time” 1984.
After having been somewhat disappointed by the washed out Geordie riffs and mellowed bass by Raven from BTATS, which was an obvious attempt from the execs to bring forth the digital synth chords to craft a more mid-80s post-dust melancholia, “Outside The Gate” is something which I consider to being an anomaly, an easily avoidable mistake, and almost an insult to pure Gatherers. One would have thought that after a few years of hefty releases before mellowing down with their commercial attempts of BTATS that the KJ would have done and subsequently “passed” that pop phase, but “Gate” proved otherwise. A band in top form with one of the greatest lineups of their career (Big Paul & Raven have always been overlooked in history books) should have taken a hint when the record company forced what would have been a Jaz Coleman solo outing (backed by the Jokers as supporting band) to be promoted & sold as a KJ product, leading to Big Paul being fired (and his original drum tracks erased from the mix) and Raven going uncredited for the few tracks he did lull through (& then leaving the outfit). Imagine if you will Led Zep firing John Bonham & John Paul Jones fired during “Houses Of The Holy”.

“Outside The Gate” would have worked if it wouldn’t have been a KJ album, simply because Gatherers seem to have too many expectations from such a band. Granted everyone has their preferences and try to justify why some records are more representative to what is considered the KJ sound than others, and opinions are quite divided on “Gate”. Some simply state it`s rubbish to be avoided while others claim it doesn`t deserve the harsh reception it did. Upon my own first listen of the album when it originally came out, I was never able to sit through two songs, simply feeling that whatever this record was supposed to be, it simply did not meet my own needs of the time. Even when trying to go through it decades later, I still find myself unable to get passed the fact it was marketed as a KJ record.

My personal suggestion is not to listen to this record if you haven’t been exposed to KJ beforehand. If wishing to experience “Outside The Gate”, start off with “Night Time”, move on to “BTATS”, and then try to sit through “Gate”. If you are a Gatherer and still want to add this one to your collection, I simply can state that this is KJ at its most sterile, lifeless, and somewhat pretentious, as it was principally intended as an offshoot attempt rather than a group oriented effort. Definately not for everyone, to say the least!

I DISAGREE! This is one of my all time favourite albums, not just of Killing Joke but of anyone. It takes a few listens and is of its time sound wise but those riffs! I actually went back to this when the remaster came out expecting to be dissapointed but fell in love all over again. Drama, tunes Geordie and Jaz. Brilliant.
