this is incredible... spot on compositions. vibes, interesting fusion of acoustic and electriconics/sampling etc.. this is now 22 years old and re-issued.. I am still amazed how pure and fresh this sounds after playing it many times in the past. there is a delicate, mystic, melancholic, and cinematic vibe on this album that I didn't find on any other electronic release. a very pure original underrated piece of work. - My favourite electronica album. It does it all: builds warm layers with enough percussive patterns to form a structure, but is carried softly around from track to track as if carried by the waves it was inspired by, it evokes real-life experiences and places, carries a distinct, memorable emotion. Could be a great gateway into the genre, but rewards repeated listens and focused listening sessions. The kind of electronica that is rooted in analogue, tangible, real experiences, which it conveys beautifully. Real marine environments and landscapes, waves hypnotically washing over the shore, the sounds of crickets in the warm nights... It's electronic, but it's warm, nocturnal and full of salty warm sands. An incredibly atmospheric album which I've been returning to most often. Where others might prefer electronic releases which are more detached and cold, this one is for those who prefer a warmer, more real kind of a journey.
As to the remaster and reissue, I haven't noticed any distinctive differences between the original release and this one. My original issue has been played so many times that I've grown to expect everything in its place and the reissue delivers it perfectly. It's super quiet in the silences and plays wonderful. It sounds a bit punchier, perhaps, and the sound layers feel to be placed more upfront and come across as more distinctive, detailed, but this may only be because it's brand new and my ears are more impressionable because of the pristine condition of the vinyl as opposed to my overplayed original.
In any case, this is a great piece to build your electronica collection around on vinyl. It fills the room with warmth and creates a mellow, relaxing mood that takes you on a journey from start to finish. A definite recommendation - i have the impression that the remaster focuses on other details than the original pressing. maybe my (2000s) copy is just played too much. all the better that there is now this reissue.

Very underated LP by Arovane, one of the most interesting things to come out of the IDM scene algon with Isan.
I own the original but if reissued I would happily buy it again!- Edited 11 years ago

Distant yet intimate, the pulsing rhythms and minimalist melodic motifs merge in blissful solitude. Meandering, lo-fi textural interludes and wafting acoustic fragments shape the whole of this collection, inviting the listener to pause, reflect. Harpsichord and electronics enjoy a close union here.
It is that moment on a sunset beach when you take one last, deep breath. - Edited 18 years ago

"Tides", in my opinion, is Uwe Zahns best release by far. Nine perfectly arranged melancholic tracks, with a nostalgic sound comparable to Boards of Canadas "Twoism" or Boom Bips "Seed to Sun". A must-have if you`re into this kind of music. - Edited 19 years ago

Words by fellow reviewers cannot be topped as this is quite an eloquent album of warm soundscapes.
I put this soothing album on my MP3, in-ear headphones & i'm a kip. Sounds of the Sea, warm, organic electronics & beautiful chords. Probably best listened to near a sun-drenched beach on a faraway island, but really is an essential listen wherever you are.
Not your average Arovane album. Better! referencing Tides (CD, Album) TowerblockCD001
Tides is a lovely work, superior to Atol Scrap -- much deeper and warmer. From the harpsicord on the opening track, "Theme," you can tell that this album has been more thought out and more fully rendered. The electronics are more fully integrated, as are the beats. A excellent example of the potential and power of electronic music.referencing Tides (CD, Album) TowerblockCD001
A quite breathtaking album. This is quite a different affair from Arovane's output on the Din label - much more laid back and organic in mood and texture. Skillfuly used samples of sea-birds and children playing help to create a tranquility that compliments the guitar playing of label-colleague Christian Kleine perfectly. On a similar note to naitsabes above, when city life becomes too much, I put this on the car stereo and head out to a secluded spot in the countryside, and stop the car to absorb the haunting beauty of this album in an idyllic setting.- Edited 22 years ago

What a wonderful album. The title "tides" describes it pretty well, it's like stitting on the bank of a huge lake, watching the wind playing with the waters. Very beautiful composed with warm sound, but also lonely and yearning.
