- Edited 2 years agoI wish this was pressed on 33. It's a very quiet pressing as there's a lot of music on each side, so background noise and vinyl distortion really impact a lot of the tracks. Loudness is about half (!) of older NS releases, and unlike older Levon stuff there are a lot of very quiet parts that really suffer under this. It's a problem with many of the later NS releases and I honestly don't know what Levon is thinking by forcing everything on 45.
Also I have checked several copies and basically they all have a wobbly pressing, especially on the C side, which is a shame as The Vampire Lestat is one of the best tracks here. She Likes To Wave To Passing Boats is just painful to listen to with the heavy wobble. No idea if there are copies out there with a nicely centered C side.
Aside from the pressing problems the music is absolutely sublime. Hands down my favourite is the Philip Glass cover version. Glass's influence is kinda obvious on many of Levon's releases (also several tracks on this LP, like Lestat and Ratios III) so I guess this was a long time coming, but the way it turned out is just mindblowing! Anyway, all tracks are gold here really.
I'm usually not the guy to comes to Discogs to complain about pressing qualities. Really though, if this ever gets repressed (and as it seems to be deep in shark territory already, probably not the worst idea), I put money down for it again any time if they put in a little more work into a decent sounding pressing. Such a shame, really. If you don't want to be overcharged for a subpar pressing you should probably go for the digital release.
2/5 for the pressing, 8/5 for the music --> still a straight-up 5/5. - Seems like Levon Vincent has followed an even more minimal concept for this album, very consistent tracks, you get the idea for the tune immediately, but for me it´s a pretty big lack of surprises and additional atmospheres, as I was used to on the early Novel sound releases. I loved these moments, when you feel like a thunderstorm starts out of nowhere.. these moments are missed here much.
- Beautiful record! Thanks for the free mp3s Levon, I ended up buying the 3LP mid way through a first spin.
