- I was shocked at how surprisingly superior the sound quality is of this club edition. I rate it equal in sound quality to the original pressing of Aja. Don’t pass up this pressing if come across it.
- Edited one month agoLike my NZ pressed copy of Aja, this pressing does not sound good. Very muted sound, lacking any significant high and low end - sounds like multiple tape copies. Music is fantastic though.
Avoid all NZ pressed Steely Dan albums, they just aren't worth it and you're much better off picking up US and UK pressings - they are plentiful and often sell for less than the NZ equivalents. - Steely Dan's Pretzel Logic (1974) finds the band refining its signature sound, balancing their jazz-rock inclinations with a growing emphasis on concise songwriting and studio experimentation. This album, their third, marks a departure from the extended jams of their earlier work, favoring tighter arrangements and a more focused approach to songcraft.
Pretzel Logic is an album of intriguing contradictions. Its polished production and sophisticated harmonies are juxtaposed with lyrics that explore themes of escapism, disillusionment, and the absurdity of modern life. Donald Fagen's vocals, with their characteristic cool detachment, deliver these narratives with a wry sense of irony.
The album features a diverse range of musical styles, from the bluesy swagger of "Pretzel Logic" and "Night by Night" to the reggae-infused "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo." "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," with its infectious melody and cryptic lyrics, became the band's biggest hit to date, showcasing their ability to craft commercially successful songs without compromising their artistic vision. "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" offers a moment of introspection, with its gentle acoustic guitar and soulful vocals.
Pretzel Logic is an album that rewards careful listening. Its intricate arrangements, layered harmonies, and thoughtful lyrics reveal new depths with each playthrough. While it may not be as widely acclaimed as Aja or Gaucho, Pretzel Logic represents a crucial step in Steely Dan's evolution, showcasing their growing mastery of studio craft and their ability to blend complex musical ideas with accessible pop sensibilities. It's a snapshot of a band confidently navigating its creative path, pushing boundaries while staying true to its unique vision. - Edited 3 months ago
referencing Pretzel Logic (LP, Album, Gatefold) ABCD-808
Laid my hands on a pristine copy of this pressing and it sounds amazing. Wasnt really expecting anything less - Of all the versions and masterings of Pretzel Logic this is the digital version to own. To my ear on my system far superior to the recent AP SACD or any other masterings discussed on the SH or Audiophile Style forums.
- I have a 1974 release with Gloversville scratched out and Pinckneyville etched in. I do not find this in any of the searches i have looked at
Matrix / Runout (side A Runout etched): AB 808A W1 (Stamped scratched over 回-G-回 ) ◈-P-◈ ||
Matrix / Runout (side B Runout etched): AB 808B W1 (Stamped scratched over 回-G-回 ) ◈-P-◈ || - Mine has MCA RECORDS, MCA 37042 in the upper right corner. Great soundstage, separation and dynamics. Very happy with this copy.
- Oh wow. When I bought this I wasn’t sure what to expect as club pressing that use their own metal parts can be hit or mis but this one is certainly a HIT! The vinyl is a bit thinner than my original white label promo and black label standard cut but the deadwax is actually smaller at the end of each side which means this was cut with slightly wider grooves which can lead to better dynamics. In addition, the stampers could have been a lot fresher with this press than the standard retail cut. In the case of my press, I got a HOT stamper for sure. Dynamic, transparent, wide and tonally correct. Same beautiful gatefold sleeve too. Highly recommended
- I think this second UK pressing sounds really good better than the first on probe label or pretty similar. Recommended.
- Edited 4 months agoOk, but as others have said - definitely muffled. I wouldn’t buy the vinyl for this very reason - it’s 4 x cost of the SACD.
