In very short speak... a BIG improvement on any of the original recording's; retains the detail, but adds a lot 'fuller', 'richer' sound... definitely recommended.

Quietly unleashed upon the world in 1989 to approximately no fanfare, radio airplay or any kind of recognition, 'When Dream and Day Unite', the debut album of progressive metal band Dream Theater, was the birth of a legend that approximately nobody saw coming.

It's a debut that has garnered mixed reactions since its release, despite the bands later successes. Personally, I think this is an incredible effort with some fantastic compositions, especially for such a young band. The band clearly know who their influences are, and hold no gripes against showing it, as there are definitely similarities here to bands such as Iron Maiden, Queensryche and most notably, Rush.

Vocalist Charlie Dominici, making his only appearance on a studio album, has always been a common complaint of fans. His pop-inspired singing grating to some, I think his voice has a very majestic tone to it that perfectly fits the raw sound of this album, especially when accompanied by Kevin Moore's 80's sounding keyboards. As for the others, guitarist John Petrucci, drummer Mike Portnoy and John Myung are all serious musicians (having met at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston), who are only just starting their incredible journeys to becoming some of the most revered and respected musicians in the world.

Another strong point of this album of "young" musicians is the lyrics, which contain some of the most random and yet, well thought-out passages I've ever heard. Especially on the track 'Only a Matter of Time'. Other gems worth checking out are 'A Fortune in Lies', 'The Killing Hand' and 'Light Fuse and Get Away'.

An incredible debut. Not as polished as ‘Images and Words’ and lacking the production values of ‘Scenes from a Memory’, but strip away any faults and there are some truly great songs here.

Someone knows if this pressing uses the 2002 remaster or the original mix? The JP additional booklet do not contain information about the original team who worked on the RM (Jimmy Starr,...), only an engineer called Shigeki Fujino.

Early Dream Theater which I hardly ever listened to (or late either) have often been accused of resembling Queensryche and Fates Warning, since I now was interested in their new drummer I also started listening to their old stuff, and bands that comes to mind is more in the style of Fates Warning as mentioned before but also Sieges Even and most of all Yngwie Malmsteens commercial period thrown together... (at its worst even reminiscent of Van Halens pop period which went on far too long with Sammy Hagar)

Those were the bands I listened to back in those days (we're talking 1989 and forwards to the grunge era up to mid 90s when other bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains beat them in interest keeping it fresh in a different progressive rock sound)

Not a bad debut, despite the album has a distinct demosound, but of course not as good as before mentioned early Fates Warning which are a totally unique experience or Sieges Evens 2 first and Watchtower who were among those bands who wrote the bible on these technical patterns...or Queensryches EP and 1st LP from 82 to 84 and Crimson Glory around 86 (which both had godly singers)...so I had already been listening to this sound for 5 years and more...

I always thought too little too late of this band but not bad at all...as good a rating from a Queensryche fan as it gets...

They were in the same situation as Lamb of God if you think about it, they can't help being in a later generation with supergroups like Slayer and Pantera already doing it for 20+ years

But DT came during the grunge era 5 years too late but still going strong today, but always a part of the 2nd generation of this type of bands which nowadays still produces new generations with skills, as it should be... (as long as they're not part of any bandwagon bands who are doing the same thing 10 years after like Pantera said "The Great Southern Trendkill" is needed then...)

Last song on the album I thought was a Rush cover (later Rush) but guess it's a kind of hommage of the style which is a good thing, at least 2 or 3 tracks on this one that is great for being from 1989...but as mentioned before I am always comparing them to Fates Warning & the whole genre as you would any fusion rock band...that's why the kinda new band OSI is a good thing.

I'm specifically reviewing the 2002 Limited Edition Remaster by One Way Records. Get this if you can find it, because it's a YUGE improvement over the original mix. Much more clarity, but also more punch, to everything. If you have a low opinion of this album, hearing the remaster might change your mind, but that being said, Charlie Dominici was definitely not the guy for Dream Theater. I mean, he does amicably for the most part, but there are sections like the falsetto high note on Killing Hand which showcase his limitations relative to K.J. LaBrie.
