Nestled against 'Endtroducing' and 'Since I Left You' on my vinylshelve, this platter uses all the common breaks & beats from the hiphop lexicon mixed with downbeat seventies funk to provide a sleazy atmosphere of unshaven bush in a sweaty discotheque. Firmly tongue in cheek without being cheesy, this sounds like the soundtrack from Shaft recreated by an excentric English person using nothing but other records.

This album is a great collection of funky breaks, semi-dated house sounds, some downtempo tunes, retro electro-funk, and odd samples. At times I'm reminded of reworked disco classics, then other times older Chemical Brothers tunes come to mind. The album shows its age a bit, but not in a bad way.

But with "This Is A Story," things get a bit weird. I think Mr. 'Love' Lee got a tad carried away with his story of Little Billy Jones. Sure, the funky breaks are still there, now with church organs and an amusing incorporation of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5's "Super Rappin' No.2". I wouldn't say it detracts from the album, it's just an odd way to finish an album of otherwise singular songs.

Some weird, sexy downtempo from Tim 'Love' Lee with an eye firmly on the hedonistic heyday of the 70s. CONFESSIONS OF A SELECTOR loves its bongos. But there's so much funk on this album that it's easy to forgive its faults. "Incense" grooves across with its almost operatic vocals lifting it up, while "Ruffbutt" is much more gruff. "One Word" is aimed more at the dancefloor, with its Chicago-house style chords and bongo-enhanced percussion. "Everybody Loves the Jungle" starts off deep in the jungle, with heavy percussion, but suddenly turns sunny and bright with mellow synth lines and stop-start construction. "Java Jam" shares in the same indolent vibe. But the album suffers from too much reliance on sampling, particularly overreliance on a single sample (even when used to great effect like on "Nu Pholk Sound"). The last five tracks sample from story about Billy Jones, who loves to swear, which produces tongue-in-cheek tracks which takes phrases from the story and turns them nasty, making for some delicious sleazy listening.
